Planície Cantada presents “The Seasons of Cante” at the Carlos Paredes Auditorium (Benfica) on September 20th, 21st, 27th, and 28th. And, with special guests…
This show showcases some of the different atmospheres of Cante Alentejano—the street songs of the Janeiras and Kings’ Days, the traditional Cante ao Menino in churches, the Cante at home in the evenings, the mast songs, and the Cante da Liberdade!
It also commemorates UNESCO’s recognition of Cante Alentejano as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity—Cante has grown in scope; it’s no longer confined to the Alentejo; it belongs to the entire world!
Although the cante is primarily performed by the group Planície Cantada, there are guests in all four scheduled shows: soloist Joana Barão, who performs solos in the Cante ao Menino and the modas de baile (dance songs); the pair of “compadres,” actors Luís Oliveira and Ulisses Ceia, in the transition between the scenes; and two dancers, Isilda Menezes and Maria João Simões. For the sets, Arch. Pedro Cabral, watercolourist and urban sketcher.

Sobre Planície Cantada
Planície Cantada is an Alentejo choral group founded in January 2019 and based in Benfica, Lisbon. It brings together 27 singers, predominantly from the Lower Alentejo region, most of whom reside in the Greater Lisbon area.
Between singers with decades of experience in “Cante” and others with less experience, it is a living example of the transmission and dissemination of the ancestral musical culture of the Alentejo people, recognized by UNESCO in 2014 as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The group usually performs in the Alentejo “Sunday costume” of the early 20th century, and may wear the typical “Alentejo cape” in winter for performances of Cante ao Menino, Janeiras, and Reis.
With José Marques as its Master, it quickly established itself as a worthy representative and ambassador of Alentejo culture. It has performed dozens of times, both within and outside the Alentejo region, at public and private events, and is considered by many to be a reference in “Cante Alentejano.”
“As Estações do Cante” is the latest show produced by Planície Cantada and follows the successes of “Meu Alentejo Querido” and “Sol da Liberdade.” It’s a different and innovative way to present Cante Alentejano to a diverse audience!
