PlayStation 5 has sold over 7 million units since its launch
Sony shared the financial results for its fiscal year 2020 that ended in late March.
The video game and related services business remains the most profitable for Sony, especially in a year in which demand broke records due to the confinement imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, the company saw a boost in the sector due to the launch of PlayStation 5 and by the end of 2020 it had sold 4.5 million units.
Sony says in its report that it sold 3.3 million units in its last quarter, thus bringing the total units to 7.8 million consoles sold. PlayStation 4, on the other hand, maintained the forecasted line in the drop in sales, selling 1 million units in the last quarter, adding up to a total of 5.7 million throughout the year. The total number of subscribers to the PlayStation Plus service is 47.6 million, an increase of 14.7% over the previous year.
In total, PlayStation’s business for its fiscal year, with regard to operating profit, was 342.2 billion yen (2.60 billion euros), considered a record for the Japanese manufacturer.
