Politécnico de Coimbra launches 1st Edition of the Leonor Riscado Prize

The project, developed by the Higher School of Education of Coimbra, aims to boost research in Literature for Children.

The Coimbra School of Education (ESEC), from the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra (IPC), presents the first edition of the Leonor Riscado Prize, a biennial initiative that starts in 2025, to promote and distinguish research of excellence, in the area of children’s literature.

Applications begin next Wednesday, January 1st, and are open to all researchers, national and international, until June 30th. All the works proposed in the competition must have been written in Portuguese and produced in national territory.

“This award honours the professor and researcher Leonor Riscado for her remarkable contribution to studies in children’s literature and will distinguish, with a value of five thousand euros, the best academic work, study, research or unpublished book, produced in the two years before the date of submission”, reveals Professor Pedro Balaus Custódio, coordinator of the Scientific and Disciplinary Group of Humanities at ESEC.

The evaluation of the projects in competition will be carried out by a jury composed of five experts appointed by the Scientific and Disciplinary Group of Humanities of ESEC. The work that stands out in terms of originality, relevance, innovation in the field of literary studies, methodological rigour and writing quality will be awarded. The result will be announced by 31 December 2025 and, in addition to the prize money, the winner will be able to see his work published in a digital format open access by ESEC’s Publisher.

With the first edition of the Leonor Riscado Prize, the Polytechnic of Coimbra is committed to valuing and perpetuating the legacy of a reference figure in the area of children’s literature, encouraging new research of excellence that values this area of study.
