Coimbra Polytechnic strengthens sustainable commitment
with successful reforestation action in Serra da Estrela
“The third edition of the reforestation action in Folgosinho, Serra da Estrela, was a success. Every year, we not only increase the number of trees planted, but we consolidate the academic community that is interested and increasingly adheres to initiatives of this kind”, says Ana Ferreira, vice president of the Coimbra Polytechnic, regarding the activity that brought together students, teachers and non-teachers of the institution, to plant 1800 trees in Folgosinho, in the municipality of Gouveia, on March 29.
The initiative, entitled “Together Let’s Help to Reforest Serra da Estrela”, contributed to the recovery of biodiversity and restoration of the areas affected by the fires in the Serra da Estrela Natural Park in 2022, promoting the planting of indigenous species – chestnut trees, oaks and birch trees.
According to Ana Ferreira, “This reforestation action is further proof of the CPI’s continued commitment to environmental, social and economic sustainability. It reflects the commitment and dedication of the entire academic and external community, which has always been willing to collaborate for a more sustainable future. The CPI will continue to invest in initiatives such as this, which contribute to environmental health and global well-being, encouraging active participation of all and promoting a positive and lasting change. ”
The activity took place under the UNIgreen Days campaign, promoted by the UNIgreen Alliance that the IPC integrates, contributing to the compensation of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions produced in its daily activities. It was also included in the Project “Politécnico de Coimbra + Sustainable”, whose purpose is to implement sustainable environmental practices and measures in all areas of the Coimbra Polytechnic.
This event, which was attended by the Folgonatur Association, Baldios do Folgosinho, Junta de Freguesia de Folgosinho and the Municipality of Gouveia, not only sought to restore the ecosystem of the region but also to raise awareness of the importance of adopting responsible attitudes towards the preservation of the environment and sustainability.
Folgonatur, a non-profit association created after the fires in 2017, is one of the main associations to promote reforestation actions in Serra da Estrela, working continuously to mobilize human and material resources for environmental recovery in the region.
