“Starting Point”: Performance by INAC’s New Circus Performs in Brazil

CIRCOS – SESC International Circus Festival, São Paulo

Performance Dates: August 18 and 19, at 12:00 PM and 4:30 PM

“The artist must train not only his eyes, but above all his soul” – Wassily Kandinsky

INAC – National Institute of Circus Arts will participate in CIRCOS – SESC International Circus Festival, in São Paulo, Brazil, with the performance “Starting Point,” a 50-meter walkway, 14 meters high, crossing one of São Paulo’s most important avenues, next to the historic Municipal Theatre building, on August 18 and 19, at 12:00 PM and 4:30 PM.

“Ponto de Partida” (Starting Point) features actress and circus artist Jessica Lane and is a contemporary circus art research project on the theme and technique of tightrope walking. Its main source of inspiration is the work and life of artist Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) and an artistic provocation brought about by contemplation. The wire pierces the sky, delimiting two parallel “worlds.” It’s impossible not to notice, almost impossible not to look up at the sky and contemplate the creative writing developed by the tightrope walker. A meditative journey in search of meanings, colours, and forms for this new parallel reality that is emerging. Through bold, multidisciplinary research, the goal is to compose a work of art.

INAC – National Institute of Circus Arts is an international centre dedicated exclusively to circus arts located in Vila Nova de Famalicão, Portugal. The Institute develops training for artists capable of adopting a multidisciplinary approach, encouraging the emergence and affirmation of new aesthetics and a diverse range of audiences, as well as the dissemination and implementation of contemporary circus in Portugal. The National Institute of Circus Arts is a member of FEDEC – the European Federation of Professional Circus Schools.

Jessica Lane is an actress and circus performer, specialising in the high-wire technique. Trained at INAC – the National Institute of Circus Arts in Portugal, she researches tightrope walking and, since 2022, has collaborated with the Centre Européen de Funambulisme in Brussels.
