Attribution of the title of Doctor Honoris Causa to Doctor Jorge Carlos Fonseca by Universidade Portucalense
The Universidade Portucalense Infante D. Henrique approved the award of the title of Doctor Honoris Causa to Doctor Jorge Carlos de Almeida Fonseca, President of the Republic of Cape Verde, by order of November 5, 2020 of Rector Sebastião Feyo de Azevedo, within the scope of its Skills.
Under the terms of the legislation in force, this same proposal was previously the subject of a hearing by the Minister for Foreign Affairs who, on September 29, 2020, granted the claim.
Dr. Jorge Carlos Fonseca is a distinguished statesman, distinguished jurist in the areas of Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure and Constitutional, recognized university professor, and relevant Man of Culture.
In the political field, it stands out for all its long action in defense of the independence of peoples, first and foremost for the People of Cape Verde, democracy, and international cooperation, with the main objectives of promoting peace and well-being. populations. He has held important political positions in Cape Verde and in international organizations, of course the position of President of the Republic of Cape Verde, which he has held since 2011, should be highlighted.
He is the author of a vast scientific and professional production, having been recognized as an important activity as a jurist, lawyer and consultant. He has maintained an important civic intervention as a chronicler, as well as a vast teaching activity in universities and other institutions, and he also has a recognized literary activity as a poet, essayist and writer.
In all these vast areas of intervention, he published monographs and works in collective works, articles of a scientific and professional nature in periodicals, signed chronicles, and other legal works and on politics, democracy and culture. He belongs to several bodies of scientific and professional nature, and also integrates organizations of society, being a member of several associations.
He has extensive international recognition of his vast merits, of which the Portuguese State awarded the Great Necklace of the Order of Liberty on April 10, 2017, and the title of Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Lisbon, on 23 November 2017. He is also a Doctor Honoris Causa from the Federal University of Ouro Preto, a distinction awarded on August 21, 2019, and a Doctor Honoris Causa from the University Cheikh Anta Diop of Senegal, since December 6, 2019.
