Portugal at COP25 to debate carbon neutrality
Portugal will be back at the United Nations Climate Conference COP25 today.
João Pedro Matos Fernandes, Minister of the Environment, will address the plenary following a debate on the financing of the transition to carbon neutrality.
The Environment Minister will speak in the morning in plenary, on the second day, about emissions trading, transitional financing in the least developed countries and compensation mechanisms for climate change losses and damage.
Then in the European Union pavilion, the minister will have the company of environmentalists, Banco de Portugal, representatives of EDP and the president of the Portuguese Environment Agency where they will discuss Portugal’s long term strategy.
Portugal has committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, which means that the country can only mimic the amount of carbon dioxide its forests can absorb.
The debate also aims to focus on how this transition will be paid.
The COP25, which will be held in Madrid with the presidency of Chile, ends on the 13th, next Friday.
