Euro'2020

In a game in which Portugal had to have a lot of patience and concentration to defeat Hungary 3-0, playing at home, in a full stadium, something we are not used to in Portugal, and it was even believed, galvanized by the fans, who could win.

In this, which was the first round of Group F of Euro’2020, Portugal came to defend its European title won in France in 2016, it was a difficult game as expected, the Hungarian team came into play to force the error of Portugal and in a counterattack bid to surprise the team from Portugal.

In the first half, Portugal had several opportunities, the most flagrant with the captain of the national team failing in front of goal, something that is not usual for Ronaldo, others due to excellent defences by Gulácsi, who kept blocking the goal.

Opportunities kept coming and Diogo J. also at the end of the first half saw Gulácsi make an excellent save and deny him the first for Portugal. This game marks another record for Cristiano Ronaldo, the first player to participate in five Europeans.

Second half Portugal started well but Hungary started attacking and with the help of more than 50,000 fans, they gained confidence and created several opportunities, with shots from afar.

Portugal was losing breath and making some mistakes in this period, with the only dangerous move for the Portuguese team, which was created by Pepe in a corner by Bruno Fernandes, but which Gulácsi defended once more.

In the 68th minute, Bruno Fernandes tried his luck, with a strong and well-placed shot, but Gulácsi managed to defend it out. Cristiano Ronaldo, in the 75th minute, inside the Hungarian area was asking for a penalty for hand on the ball, but the referee and the VAR did not sanction the Hungarians.

The Hungarians would even put the ball in Rui Patrício’s net, caught off guard, but who was invalidated for offside.

Fernando Santos then made the first substitutions, Rafa Silva and Renato Sanches, players who came to give freshness and creativity to Portugal’s attack. It was at the end of the second half that the Portuguese victory would materialize.

In 15 minutes, Portugal showed, with goals, the superiority they showed in almost the entire game, in which they dominated and created opportunities that did not materialize.

Raphael Guerreiro, on 84 minutes, managed to finish off the Hungarian wall, Rafa Silva crossed to the centre of the area where the player, with the help of Orbán, who deflected the Portuguese’s shot, deceived Gulácsi, scoring the first for Portugal.

Then it was Rafa Silva, who, in an insistence move in the Hungarian penalty area, forced the home defender to make a foul, sanctioned by the referee with a penalty.

Cristiano Ronaldo was unaffected by the Hungarian public and masterfully scored the second for Portugal in the 85th minute. The Portuguese captain would still score again in added time, in an individual move and in front of Gulácsi’s, dribbles the goalkeeper and scores his one hundred and sixth goal for the national team, he is now 3 goals behind the Iranian Ali Daei’s record.
