Portugal guarantees (at least) silver in mixed teams of judo

Portugal qualified today for the final of the mixed European judo competition of the II European Games, defeating the Netherlands 4-2, and will play the European title with Russia or Belarus.

In the semi-finals of the competition, held in Minsk, Jorge Fernandes, Barbara Timo, Rochele Nunes and Telma Monteiro won their matches, Anri Egutidze and Jorge Fonseca lost and left the result in 3-2.

In the tiebreaker, in the category of -57 kg, Telma Monteiro met the Dutchman Sanne Verhagen, who had won on Saturday the bronze medal at -57 kg, and gave the Portuguese team victory in extra time.

It was on the golden score at 8.42 minutes that Telma scored for waza-ari and resolved the fight that took more than 12 minutes.

With this qualification, Portugal secured its seventh medal in Minsk2019, after the gold of Carlos Nascimento in the 100 meters, of the silver of acrobats Bárbara Sequeira, Francisca Maia and Francisca Sampaio Maia in combined and in the dynamic exercise, besides the bronze in the test of balance, and the bronze of Telma Monteiro and the mixed messenger 4×400 meters, Ricardo dos Santos, Cátia Azevedo, João Coelho and Rivinilda Mentai

In the first edition of the European Games, in Baku, Portugal climbed 10 times on the podium.
