Portugal is eliminated for the first time before the quarter-finals of a European Championship, losing to Belgium, in Seville, by 0-1.
Thorgan Hazard, in a powerful shot from outside the area, scored the goal that earned the Belgians the victory, in the 42nd minute.
Kevin de Bruyne, who had been brought down by João Palhinha at the end of the first half – a move that earned the Portuguese a yellow card – could not stand the pain and was replaced by Dries Mertens early in the second half, thus losing the Belgians to your most creative unit.
After an overly passive first-half, the National Team took possession of the ball in the second half and immediately managed to create several finishing situations, by Diogo Jota, João Félix and Bruno Fernandes, the last two already entered in the 55th minute, for the places of João Moutinho and Bernardo Silva. André Silva, Sérgio Oliveira and Danilo also joined the Portuguese team.
Raphael Guerreiro had the best opportunity to tie the match when he hit the post, with a shot with his right foot, in the 84th minute.
Belgium will play Italy in the quarter-finals in Munich, Germany.
