Portugal receives international consumer congress focused on digital

Portugal will host an international consumer congress between Monday and Thursday, which will focus on digital commerce, involving 120 speakers from almost 90 nationalities, said the Secretary of State for Consumer Protection.

This congress will provide the possibility of confronting the perspective of consumers, large and small-scale economic operators and also public bodies and agents that work every day to stimulate public policies for consumer protection,” said João Torres.

According to the official, the theme of the digital economy “is a great opportunity for humanity“, but also introduces risks and vulnerabilities.

The action to better defend consumers in this area has to be working on different levels – at the national, European, but also at the global level. What we find is that digital commerce today is often done practically without frontiers,” he said. defended

In addition to this theme, along the four days of the Consumers International Summit 2019: The Digital Hive, which will take place at the Estoril Congress Center, Lisbon district, will also be debated topics such as cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and the need to building digital economies that benefit and protect citizens.

The event, which has the support of the Government, “will also address the challenges that are posed to the level of privacy and data protection,” said João Torres.

On Monday, a reception will be held, presided over by the Deputy Minister of Economy and Economy, Pedro Siza Vieira, which will also include, among others, the president of the Consumers Summit, Bart Combée.

On the zero days of the Congress, which will be attended by the Secretary of State for Consumer Protection, there will also be “heating” debates, promoted by nine organizations, including the General Directorate for Consumer Affairs (DGC) and Deco.

The Consumer Directorate-General will organize an event dedicated to the exchange of good practices with government consumer organizations from non-EU countries, including representatives from South Korea, Mexico and Morocco,” said João Torres.

In turn, the Deco event aims to promote the debate with various technicians, such as experts, educators, politicians and companies, on “the importance and urgency of preparing young consumers for the digital world.

This is the second time that Portugal receives the Consumers International Summit, which now happens “at a time when the public policy of consumer protection is animated by new challenges and opportunities,” said the official.

Throughout the four days of the Congress are expected more than 500 people.

Among the invited speakers are Internet Society CEO Andrew Sullivan, Google Al director Eve Anderson, Vodafone public policy director Reinald Krüger and Mozilla defence vice president Ashley Boyd.
