Portugal to export hydrogen produced from renewables

Portugal is going to produce hydrogen from renewable sources to export to the Netherlands, both countries agreed today with a common memorandum, the Environment Ministry said today.

The understanding will link the hydrogen plans of Portugal and the Netherlands for 2030, with the production and transport of green hydrogen from Portugal to the Netherlands envisaged in a connection between the ports of Sines and Rotterdam.

This bilateral collaboration may come to apply for an Important Project of Common European Interest, a figure that allows European funding for shared projects from member states.

Portugal and the Netherlands want the creation of a true international hydrogen market, with market rules that make it possible to export.

The project should start to be applied next year, also referring that during 2020, the necessary procedures applicable to the various aspects of the renewable gas value chain will be approved, including the licensing of installations and the regulation of hydrogen injection in natural gas networks.
