Portugal wins 22 medals in World Athletics
João Vieira’s silver medal, in the 50 km march, is the 22nd Portuguese medal in the World Athletics Championships.
Two years after Inês Henriques was champion at the same distance, João Vieira is at 43, the oldest medal athlete in the Worlds, finishing the race at 4: 04.59 hours, 39 seconds after the winner, the Japanese Yosuke Suzuki.
It was in the capital of Qatar that João Vieira won the second medal in World Championships, after bronze in the 20 km march of 2013.
Naide Gomes received the bronze medal in the long jump at the 2009 World Championships.
Already Nelson Évora, who this year was eliminated in the triple jump qualifications, and Fernanda Ribeiro are still the most medaled Portuguese in the World, four times climbed the podium.
