Portugal wins gold in basketball at INAS Global Games

Portugal today won four medals on the last day of the INAS Global Games, world competition for athletes with intellectual disabilities, through the selection of basketball (gold) and cyclist Carlos Carvalho (three silver medals).

The basketball team regained the title of world champion after their 94-68 final win over Australia. The hosts had caused Portugal’s only defeat in the whole tournament, but the Portuguese team always managed to stay in the lead of the final, winning the title.

Regarding cycling, Carlos Carvalho secured three silver medals in track events: 3,000 meters chase, 750 meters time trial and 200 meters sprint.

Note also for the ceremony that took place at the end of the Games, which distinguished Sandro Baessa as best male athlete, the Portuguese basketball team as best team and Mário Dias, former president of the National Association of Sport for Intellectual Disability (ANDDI-Portugal) , with the ‘Unsung Hero’ award, in recognition of his dedication to sports.

Portugal ends the INAS Global Games with 13 medals: three gold, seven silver, and three bronze.
