The Portuguese Innovation Society (SPI), a consultancy based in Oporto, organizes a business visit to three Chinese cities in November, under the European Commission’s ENRICH project.
The ENRICH Matchmaking and Innovation Tour to China runs from November 11 to 16 and aims to “open up business opportunities, research and cooperation in innovation” between European and Chinese entities, according to the SPI statement.
The agenda includes visits to Suzhou and Wuxi on the east coast of China and to Shenzhen, the first Chinese Special Economic Zone to open up to foreign investment and private enterprise in the south of the country.
Participants will visit leading companies in technology innovation and participate in thematic seminars, with networking sessions.
SPI was the consultant chosen by the European Commission to coordinate the ENRICH (European Network of Research and Innovation of Centers and Hubs, China) Center of Excellence, a platform that supports European technology companies in the Chinese market.
ENRICH, funded under Horizon 2020, offers consultancy, collaboration and specialized training for European research companies and organizations. Horizon 2020 is the largest public research and innovation support program in the world with a budget of almost € 80 billion.
Beijing has launched a plan called ‘Made in China 2025’, aimed at transforming the country into a technological powerhouse with capabilities in the high value-added sectors including artificial intelligence, renewable energy, robotics and electric cars.
That plan is seen by Washington as a threat to the US industrial domain and is at the heart of China-US trade disputes.
Last month, European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation Carlos Moedas told the Lusa news agency in Beijing that “at this time of commercial wars [Europe] should try to take up space in relation to what extraordinary capacity is of China in innovation and science. ”
“We have to be here to mark our position, because others are not doing it, and that gives us a great advantage, also commercial,” he added.
Founded in 1997, Sociedade Portuguesa de Inovação is a private consulting firm that works in the areas of innovation, the promotion of internationalization of companies and knowledge management.
