Prices in existing electricity contracts increase up to 7%

Prolonged confinement is expected to increase residual consumption by 23% in the first quarter of 2021

Electricity providers have increased prices on most existing contracts earlier this year, despite a 0.6% price drop in the regulated market and prices for new contracts show a downward trend.

A study by Payper.pt, reveals significant increases in the cost of electricity paid by consumers, in most existing electricity contracts, last January compared to the prices charged in December 2020, reaching this increase, in some cases, up to 7, 2%, in a study carried out thanks to an artificial intelligence algorithm applied to more than 6,000 invoices submitted on its platform since the beginning of 2021.

It should be noted that at the end of last year, the regulatory authority approved a variation of sales tariffs in the regulated market of -0.6% for 2021, reflecting the reduction in energy costs observed in the markets throughout 2020, as well as the progressive reduction that has been applied to network access charges.

In this context, a final effect of reduction in invoices paid by consumers would be expected, a reduction that this study reveals is not being applied by traders to most existing contracts.
