  • The award distinguishes national SMCs that stand out for their financial strength, commitment to knowledge, and growth through internationalization;
  • The winners, on average, doubled their turnover in a decade;
  • Applications are open until September 22nd.

COTEC Portugal, a business association for innovation, promotes the 19th Edition of the COTEC-BPI PME Innovation Award, an initiative that distinguishes Small and Medium-sized Companies (SMCs) that stand out for their leadership, culture, good management practices, and unequivocal international growth and competitiveness based on the use of knowledge and innovation.

Applications are open until September 22nd and can be formalized via the initiative’s website.

According to Jorge Portugal, General Director of COTEC, “The Award allows us to understand which characteristics make innovation a success factor for national SMEs. Over these 18 years, it has anticipated and recognized the successful trajectories of companies that are building the innovation economy in Portugal. We have shared inspiring stories of leadership, cultures, and practices that deserve to be recognized and even studied.”

Since its launch in 2005, the Award has distinguished 23 companies from different economic sectors, such as information technologies, engineering services, agri-food, sustainable mobility, technical textiles, robotics, automation, and pharmaceuticals.

Over the last decade, the SMCs awarded the award have demonstrated an innovative identity and a robust and sustained development trajectory. These companies grew at an average rate of 10% per year, operating in areas of high added value.

It should be noted that some of the winning companies were founded just a generation ago. Despite their youth – they have an average age of 23 years -, the winners are contributing to transforming the specialization profile of the Portuguese economy, with greater penetration in medium and high technology sectors, leading to an increase in the value of exports.

Finalists with strict selection criteria
The selection of finalist companies is based on demanding criteria for investment in knowledge and innovation, high economic performance, and financial strength.

For example, finalist SMCs will have to complete the Innovation Scoring maturity model, a diagnostic system for business innovation performance from COTEC Portugal. Subsequently, they receive a face-to-face visit to confirm and collect additional information.
These are two of the phases of the rigorous evaluation carried out by COTEC Portugal and the initiative’s Jury, in order to guarantee the quality and rigor of the processes for nominating candidate companies, instructing applications, and awarding the Prize.

The Jury for this edition is chaired by Pedro Barreto (BPI) and composed of Ana Teresa Lehman (Faculty of Economics – University of Porto), António Portela (BIAL), Carlos Oliveira (Fundação José Neves), João Bigote (University of Coimbra), José Carlos Caldeira (INESC TEC), Lua Queiroz Pereira (Semapa), Manuel Mira Godinho (ISEG) and Manuela Tavares de Sousa (Imperial).
