The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, will visit Macau on April 30 and May 1, during a state visit to China, announced today the Territory Government.
The two-day visit to Macau is part of the Portuguese President’s visit to China, which will start next Thursday at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping.
In the territory, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will meet the chief of the executive, Fernando Chui Sai On, said in a statement the cabinet of the Government spokesman.
Between April 25 and 27 in Beijing, the President of the Republic will participate in the second “One Lane, One Route” Forum.
The forum will be attended by 37 heads of state or government, including Macau’s chief executive Fernando Chui Sai On, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Friday.
Later, between May 11 and 19, Chui Sai On will make an official visit to Portugal, which will hold meetings with the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister, António Costa.
Launched in 2013 by the Chinese President, the “One Track, One Route” initiative embodies Beijing’s new internationalist vocation.
Portugal is, to date, one of the few European Union countries to formally endorse a project that has aroused disagreements with the Western powers, who see a new world order shaped by a strategic rival with a profoundly different political system and values.
