- More than 4400 citizens have already signed the petition
- Support from various figures of national and international culture
The emblematic company of Porto, which turns 50 in 2023, continues to fight for its continuity after being excluded from the DGArtes Sustained Support concession, which it applied for the next 4 years, despite having reached the necessary score for its eligibility, but in that the budget allocated to DGArtes for this purpose is considered insufficient.
There are several initiatives that have been taking place since the end of last year, including a petition under the motto “We will not let the Seiva Trupe die”, organized by citizens of civil society and which has already surpassed 4400 signatures.
This decision by DGArtes has led to a wave of solidarity with Seiva Trupe, through support in the form of testimonials from various national and international public figures. The president of Futebol Clube do Porto, Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa, declared his support in a video in which, in addition to referring to the importance of Seiva Trupe as a cultural entity, he also called for the intervention of the Mayor of Porto, Rui Moreira.
In addition to Pinto da Costa, the iconic Companhia Teatral do Porto has received various support in the form of written or video testimonials: from Guillermo Heras, President of the Association of Directors of Spain, António Sampaio da Nóvoa, Ambassador at UNESCO, former candidate president and former Rector of the University of Lisbon, researcher Manuel Sobrinho Simões, Isabel Pires de Lima, former Minister of Culture, Professor and Physicist Carlos Fiolhais, Bishop of Porto, Dom Manuel Linda, Carlos Avilez, director of Teatro Experimental from Cascais and former director of the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II, Maria do Céu Guerra, actress, musician Rui Reininho, among many others.
The public also joined this fight with the initiative “I am also Seiva Trupe”, making videos of support that have been shared on social networks.
Soon Seiva Trupe will submit a Hierarchical Request and will continue the various protest initiatives for the survival of the Theater Company.
