Pride came to Lisbon!
June is Pride Month, all around the world people have been celebrating equality and sexual freedom with several camps, marches and celebrations. Naples, Strasbourg, Bucharest, France, Santiago and Detroit were some of the cities that celebrated equality, and of course, our beautiful Lisbon was not behind.
Last Saturday, June 22th, Terreiro do Paço in Lisbon was submerged by the colours of the rainbow and served as the stage for the biggest LGBT+ event in Portugal. There were thousands of people who passed through Arraial Pride 2019 and celebrated their freedom and equality, several artists also helped share the rights of the LGBT community, the poster was composed by Rosa & Tigra + Gaivota de lava, Marinño and Kiko, Cumbadélica, Da Chick, Hucalicious with Bruno Huca, Finalmente presenting Lugar às Novas, Johnny Hooker, DJ Batida, Aurora Pinho and Sonja.
The pride village started at 4 pm and ended only at 4 o’clock in the morning. It was 12 hours of pure joy, love and pride, where all the people, from the youngest to the oldest, were invited to celebrate equality.
This great celebration was organized by ILGA, the oldest Portuguese association to defend equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex people. The main purpose of ILGA Portugal Association is to integrate into society the lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex population through a broad social support program that guarantees the improvement of their quality of life: through the fight against discrimination in sexual orientation and gender identity, the promotion of citizenship, human rights and gender equality.
BUT, pride does not end here! There will also be a march celebrating the 20 years of the LGBT+ Pride March in Lisbon, the 45 years of freedom and the 50 years of the Stonewall Revolt, to remember the courage of all people who fought for today’s victories, marching for what remains to be accomplished. This march will be celebrated next Saturday, June 29th, at 17 pm, starts at Príncipe Real and ends at Ribeira das Naus Avenue, by the river.
