Primavera Sound returns with more than 70 artists “for all audiences”
The eighth edition of NOS Primavera Sound, which runs from Thursday to Saturday in the Parque do Cidade do Porto, has more than 70 national and foreign artists and the desire to embrace “all audiences”.
During the three days, they will go through the various stages of the event, which is a partner of the Primavera Sound of Barcelona, names such as Interpol, Erykah Badu, Guided by Voices, Jorge Ben Jor, Low, Courtney Barnett, Solange or Rosalía. 70 names in all.
As for highlights, the programmer points out the “very special and careful” show by Solange Knowles, Beyoncé’s sister, also because it is “a musical style that is not very programmed at festivals in Portugal”, after having seen the performance in the ‘brother’ of Barcelona.
Among other names mentioned, what is a “perfect cocktail” of different sounds are Aldous Harding, the “rare opportunity” to see Guided by Voices again, the “great freshness” of Spanish Rosalía, but also Erykah Badu, Modeselektor, James Blake, and Nina Kraviz.
In the framework of Portuguese names, Barreiro highlights the “three generations, from the 27 years of ProfJam to 62 of Lena D’Agua”, also by the rapper Allen Halloween or Mai Kino.
To these they join the names of Dino D’Santiago, Surma, Jackie and Violet, besides the producer Branko, confirmed after the cancellation of Kali Uchis.
The new urban sonorities, explains the director, are, on the one hand, a way of contacting “a great part of the creativity in the current music”, that considers being in genres like the rap or the trap, and on the other one attempt to “play new audiences” and “rejuvenate the average age of the festival, which by 2018 was 32, 33 years old.”
In 2020, the festival has already announced one of two exclusive dates of the American Pavement, which will also play in Barcelona, a year of celebration for the brand, which reaches the 20th and has therefore a commemorative edition in Los Angeles.
He added that there could still be “more surprises”, José Barreiro assures that the expansion to the other side of the Atlantic can give Porto something that “benefits directly and indirectly” because they are “good friends” for a city, “like this, next to Barcelona or Los Angeles “.
This year, it continues to focus on “reducing the ecological footprint”, by replacing the material of the cards with the public, of plastic for “bio PVC”, the implementation of electric bicycles in the production and the provision of 10 parking spaces for cars with chargers.
