Panem et Circenses – Bread and entertainment, Rome in 79 AD: The centre of the Roman Empire is the richest city in the world and there is a large flow of slaves to take care of the works of the growing empire. The Roman population (annoyed, restless and increasingly violent) was kept in line thanks to two things: the provision of food and spectacular entertainment, in the form of chariot races and gladiator fights. Those About to Die enter the world of gaming, characterized by the thirst for blood, money, power and corruption. Racing in the Circus Maximus is controlled by four aristocratic authorities, the Blue, Red, White and Green factions, and shares in these factions are the most valuable thing in Rome. At the same time that the people’s taste for entertainment is more bloodthirsty, it is necessary to create a stadium specially designed for gladiators, the Coliseum. The size of the stadium and the gladiator and animal fights is enormous, as is the underworld of the growing gambling business. Underneath the stands, thousands of people work and live, among them, there are thousands who will die in the games.

The series stars two-time Oscar winner Sir Anthony Hopkins (The Silence of the Lambs, King Lear) as Emperor Vespasian, Iwan Rheon (A Game of Thrones) as Tenax, Tom Hughes (The English, Victoria) as Titus Flavianus, as Cala, and Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson (Game of Thrones) as Viggo, as well as Jojo Macari (Sex Education), Gabriella Pession (Crossing Lines), Dimitri Leonidas (Rosewater, Elite Thieves), Moe Hashim (Ted Lasso), Rupert Penry -Jones (Whitechapel), Eneko Sagardoy (Elite), Pepe Barroso (Gran Turismo), Kyshan Wilson (Under the Amalfi Sun) and Alicia Edogamhe (Summertime). The production also features Portuguese Gonçalo Almeida (Amor Amor) and Portuguese-French Sara Martins (No se lo dizes a nadie, Death in Paradise).

Those About to Die, from AGC studios, was commissioned by High-End Productions, recently created by Herbert G. Kloiber and Constantin Film, in conjunction with the streaming service Peacock, and is produced by Centropolis, Hollywood Gang and Street Entertainment. The series is written by Oscar nominee Robert Rodat (The Patriot, Saving Private Ryan), and directed by Roland Emmerich with Marco Kreuzpaintner (Beat, The Lazarus Project). Executive producers are Emmerich, Harald Kloser (2012, Heist, Midway), Gianni Nunnari (The Departed, 300), Herbert G. Kloiber, Martin Moszkowicz, Oliver Berben, Jonas Bauer, Charles Holland, Stuart Ford, Lourdes Diaz, Charles Holland, Kreuzpaintner and Rodat.
