Panem et Circenses – Bread and entertainment, Rome in AD 79: The center of the Roman Empire is the wealthiest city in the world and there is a large influx of slaves to tend to the works of the growing empire. The Roman population (annoying, restless, and increasingly violent) is kept in line thanks to two things: free food and spectacular entertainment in the form of chariot races and gladiator fights. Those About to Die enter the gaming world, characterized by the thirst for blood, money, power, and corruption. The races in the Circus Maximus are controlled by four aristocratic authorities, the Blue, Red, White, and Green factions, and the shares in these factions are the most valuable in Rome. At the same time that the people’s taste for entertainment is more bloodthirsty, it is necessary to create a stadium specially designed for gladiators, the Coliseum. The size of the stadium and the gladiator and animal fights is huge, as well as the growing underworld of the gambling business. Underneath the stands, thousands of people work and live, among them thousands who will die in the games.

Those About to Die, from AGC Studios, has been commissioned by High-End Productions, newly created by Herbert G. Kloiber and Constantin Film, in conjunction with the Peacock streaming service, and is produced by Centropolis, Hollywood Gang, and Street Entertainment. The series is written by Oscar nominee Robert Rodat (The Patriot, Saving Private Ryan), and directed by Roland Emmerich with Marco Kreuzpaintner (Beat, The Lazarus Project). Executive producers are Emmerich, Harald Kloser (2012, Assault on Power, Midway), Gianni Nunnari (Departed, 300), Herbert G. Kloiber, Martin Moszkowicz, Oliver Berben, Jonas Bauer, Charles Holland, Stuart Ford, Lourdes Diaz, Charles Holland, Kreuzpaintner and Rodat.
