Gabriela Dinis secured, this Sunday, the 3rd final place in the Pro Junior of Morocco, disputed in the waves of Casablanca. The young surfer from Carcavelos, just 17 years old, was the best Portuguese in the competition, in what was the inaugural stage of the European Pro Junior in 2022.
After qualifying for the semi-finals on Saturday, Gabriela reached the final day in Morocco with the possibility of equaling and even improving the 2nd place achieved in the inaugural stage of this same circuit last year, this time in France. However, the path of the promising Portuguese surfer was blocked in the semi-finals.
After a few hours of waiting due to fog to put the final day in the water, Gabriela Dinis was eventually surpassed by the French Maelys Jouault in the second semifinal, in a dispute with low scores, with 6.07 points for the Portuguese, against 8.84 for the opponent.
The women’s event was won by Basque Janire Gonzalez Etxabarri, European junior champion in title. On the men’s side, where Rodrigo Chaves was the best Portuguese, in 5th place, the triumph was also Basque, with Bitor Garitaonandia celebrating.
With Gabriela Dinis starting the season in 3rd place in the ranking, the action in the European Pro Junior continues to Galicia, Spain, where on Wednesday the second stage of the season begins, in the waves of Ferrol. After that, the circuit, which has 6 stages, only returns in September, with a race in France, also passing through Azores, Espinho and, again, France.
