The tribute to Paulo Branco, which will run from February 10 to 21, is part of the 2020-2021 season of the French Cinematheque, announced today.
The French Cinematheque recalls that Paulo Branco allowed the emergence of most of the most essential filmmakers in this period, from the Portuguese Manoel de Oliveira, Pedro Costa or João César Monteiro, passing through the Chilean Raúl Ruiz or the Lithuanian Sharunas Bartas.
The program dedicated to the Portuguese producer includes, on February 13, a conversation with Paulo Branco, after the exhibition of “The white city”, by Alain Tanner.
The producer Leopardo Filmes recalls, in a statement released today, that this is the second time that Cinemateca pays tribute to the Portuguese producer, after in 1992 he dedicated the tribute entitled ‘Bravo Branco’.
Paulo Branco (Lisbon, 1950) has been involved in film production and exhibition since the 1970s, although he studied Chemical Engineering.
In 1974, already in Paris, he made the programming of Cinema Olympic, in collaboration with Frédèric Mitterrand, and assumed the role of distributor of films by European directors.
As a producer, his name is associated with hundreds of Portuguese and foreign films, by directors such as Manoel de Oliveira, Pedro Costa, João César Monteiro, João Botelho, Raúl Ruiz, David Cronenberg, Wim Wenders and Werner Schroeter.
Paulo Branco created Alfama Films Production (as an international producer), with representation in Paris and Lisbon, the exhibitor Medeia Filmes and the distributor and producer Leopardo Filmes.
