University of Coimbra project reinforces gender equality in research

A project from the University of Coimbra (UC) that aims to reinforce gender equality in scientific research has just received funding of 240 thousand euros from the Conciliation and Gender Equality program within the scope of the EEA Grants – Financial Mechanism of the European Economic Area.

Designated “GendER @ UC – Gender-Equal Research”, this project, coordinated by the Interdisciplinary Research Institute of the University of Coimbra (IIIUC), brings together a multidisciplinary team that, over the next three years, it will undertake a variety of activities to address the complexity of gender inequalities in research.

Among the activities planned, the mapping of gender equality policies, procedures and practices in force in the research and development (R&D) units of the University of Coimbra stands out, in order to identify gaps, establish bases for improvements and innovations and design an action plan for this theme; carrying out actions to raise awareness of the need to implement gender equality measures in the practice of research, sessions on “Gender and leadership for excellence in research”; and the development of a manual for inclusive communication in UC research.

The project also provides for the promotion of mentoring actions, alerting to gender inequalities in “high risk, high gain” applications and motivating applications by UC researchers through close monitoring, as well as a bootcamp called WomenResearchers@UC.

The GendER@UC project is carried out in partnership with the University of Iceland and the Center for Social Studies (CES). In addition, it has the collaboration of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), AMONET-Portuguese Association of Women Scientists and scientist Jessica Cantlon, from Carnegie Mellon University, in the USA.

The Conciliation and Gender Equality program is funded by the EEA Grants – Financial Mechanism for the European Economic Area 2014-2021 and implemented by the Commission for Citizenship and Gender Equality.
