Selected Projects for the MATE Festival 2024
The selected projects for the MATE Festival 2024 have already been announced. In total, 101 projects were chosen to be part of the 2nd edition of the festival, which will take place from October 19 to 22, 2024, in Coimbra, Portugal.
These results reflect a period of intense and dynamic calls, inviting artists, creatives, and visionaries from around the world to submit their proposals in the categories of Music, Art, Technology, and Education.
More than 700 projects from over 20 countries entered the competition, and the selection was made through a mixed system that combined the evaluation of the MATE Technical Jury (70%) with public voting (30%). The competition generated enormous interest and participation, resulting in more than 200,000 votes, along with numerous shares and mentions in the media and social networks, consolidating MATE as an international platform connecting artists, professionals from the Cultural and Creative Industries, and agents from various socio-economic sectors.
MATE 2024 will bring together participants from more than 10 countries, including Portugal, Brazil, Spain, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, and Cuba, reinforcing the importance of the Festival in Ibero-America. Additionally, the presence of projects from countries such as France, Germany, and the United States will make this edition of MATE a truly international platform celebrating the best of innovation and creativity. The event will allow participants not only to share experiences and knowledge but also to create a unique collaborative network with a global reach within a vibrant community.
Community, Collaboration, and Equity: The Pillars of MATE 2024
Community, collaboration, and equity are the pillars that define the lineup of the MATE Festival 2024. Committed to valuing and promoting emerging artists, innovative projects, and transformative ideas, we opened the 2nd edition of the festival to the entire community to create a safe and plural space conducive to the sharing of ideas. Thus, we aim to encourage constructive dialogues and create future opportunities, bringing together artists, the public, and professionals from the Cultural and Creative Industries in a unique event that responds more comprehensively to the needs, interests, dreams, and values of all participants.
A festival is a living and dynamic entity that feeds on seeds of thought and intuition, which manifest during the days it takes place. Its transcendence, in the face of the natural impermanence of an event, only occurs when it is not seen as an end in itself. In this sense, we consider the entire life cycle of MATE—including the pre-production and post-production of the festival—as essential stages in its construction, development, and perpetuation. Through the collaboration of all the projects that applied for the calls, the participation of the public in voting, and the contribution of a specialized Technical Jury for the selection of projects, we managed to involve thousands of people in creating the MATE 2024 program. During this phase, we presented hundreds of projects, the result of the work we have done with our media partners, as well as tens of thousands of interactions on our social networks and website.
Thus, we brought the MATE Festival closer to a collective imagination that goes beyond the individual will of its organizers, building a healthy, safe, and vibrant community. This co-creative approach to MATE’s programming aims to increase the visibility of participants, offer opportunities to emerging talents, and promote a sense of collaboration, belonging, and collective building. The diversity of voices and the intersectionality of the projects were taken into account in the selection of all collaborators and guests, believing that significant social changes can only occur in an open and inclusive environment.
Connection to the Territory, Accessibility, and Sustainability
In addition to being a space for materializing a collective ideal, we assume the responsibility of integrating the MATE Festival 2024 into the Coimbra region, a hub of culture, knowledge, and technological innovation in Portugal. Our impact on the arts, culture, and creativity is widely recognized by the Municipality, with which we have established strategic partnerships for sustainable development aligned with the needs of the territory.
The choice of the historic Convento São Francisco to host MATE is crucial for the festival’s concept, as it represents a space of unity and reflection, in addition to providing areas for rest and interaction among participants. Located in the heart of Coimbra, it is the ideal place to promote local projects and give visibility to the artists and artisans of the region, reaffirming our commitment to the community of the Central Region of Portugal.
Sustainability is also a central pillar of our curation. We have prioritized reducing our carbon footprint by implementing a cascading mechanism that considers the environmental footprint of our partners. Furthermore, we encourage the use of sustainable transportation and ensure that the food and beverages offered at the festival are locally sourced, sustainable, and nutritious.
Ticket prices are affordable, and the event will feature various free activities, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to participate and enjoy MATE. All projects that applied for the calls will also have the chance to participate for free in the event. Together we are talent, innovation, and creativity. Together we make the MATE Festival 2024.
