PSP to train Qatari police on sports policing

PSP will train Qatar police on policing major sporting events, according to a protocol signed today between the police of the two countries in the security field of the 2022 World Cup.

In a statement, the Public Security Police announced that PSP national director Luís Farinha signed a technical memorandum of understanding in Doha today, formalizing various forms of bilateral cooperation between the Portuguese police and the police authorities in Qatar.

The director of the press and public relations department of the PSP, Alexandre Coimbra, told Lusa that this protocol provides for elements of the Portuguese police to move to Qatar to train the police of that country in security management and policing of major sporting events.

Under the protocol, it is also planned to travel to Portugal from Qatar police to accompany the PSP in policing major football matches, he said.

Alexandre Coimbra also said that this protocol comes after the police authorities in Qatar have asked for help and support to the PSP in the training of its agents.

In the statement, PSP indicates that this initiative is aimed at the preparation of security operations and international police cooperation activities related to the FIFA World Cup of 2022 and “materializes through the provision of courses, provision of advice and performance of sport policing programs with the aim of sharing experience and knowledge with Qatar police authorities.

The signing of the protocol and the cooperation established between the two countries reflects the international recognition that Portugal, and PSP in particular, has in terms of safety management of major sporting events of an international dimension, as a result of their participation in the organization of security of almost all the world championships and European football in the last two decades, “said the security force.
