Quase Nicolau presents Felicidade Moderna live

e lançam novo single

After three years of work, now, on April 11, Felicidade Moderna, the first long-lived album by Quase Nicolau, arrives.

In Felicidade Moderna, there is room for many different things. Throughout eleven songs, including suites, ballads, waltzes and other dancing or rocker themes, Quase Nicolau did not cling to one sound. The most important thing, by the way, was that each song looked just like itself. Hence, the band, with the help of producer João Correia (Tape Junk, Bruno Pernadas, Benjamin), surrendered to constant musical experimentation that went through all seasons of the year.

Between the walls of the studio, everyone could play everything. Thus not only instruments emerged that the band plays live, such as a profusion of classical guitars, acoustics, electrics and regionals, keyboards, bass and drums, but also the most colourful timbres of metallophones, melodic, synthesizers, slides, percussions of all kinds, natural and digital noises, vocal and instrumental samples and even a conversation in the rain with a small golden dog. The instrumental pallet would not be complete, however, without the contributions of invited musicians Vasco Robert and João Capinha, who played piano in four tracks and tenor saxophone, high saxophone and transverse flute in three.

Of course, for those who hear Felicidade Moderna the most evident will be voices. Much of the strength and difference of the music of Quase Nicolau comes from the voices, from the choirs with which, among the five members of the band, they sing delicate, honest and felt lyrics, in which the Portuguese language plays a fundamental role. Doesn’t mean a voice never comes alone. One of the main learnings that Quase Nicolau brought from Alvorada, their debut EP, to Felicidade Moderna, was that less can be more. With this idea in mind, the band also ventured, more than ever, to its most stripped and vulnerable moments.

Before arriving Felicidade Moderna, on 11 April, comes his last single, “Vidairada”, a week earlier. Of all the advances that preceded the disc is, at the same time, what has the most experimental and most dancing moments, the most abstract choirs and the most pop choruses. The guiding thread that unites everything is the humour and melancholy of a sung letter with tender irony.

After winning, on 21 March, the Lisbon elimination of Indie Music Fest, Quase Nicolau already has two concerts to present Felicidade Moderna on the agenda: the first in Lisbon, in the Musicbox, on 18 June; and the second in northern Portugal, on the occasion of the final of the Indie Music Fest, in Paredes, on 21 June. Live, the band presents itself as a sextet, counting, in addition to nuclear formation, with Luís Beirão in voice, keyboards and clarinet. In the alignments, you can expect the songs of Felicidade Moderna and Alvorada, as well as some surprises and the first themes of the next work whose composition has already begun.
