The Queer Porto film festival will mark the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots in New York as a milestone in the emergence of the “modern LGBTI + fighting movements” with a cycle dedicated to events, the organization announced today.
Greta Schiller and Robert Rosenberg’s documentary ‘Before Stonewall’ (1984) is one of the selected films, as is Bill Weber and David Weissman’s ‘The Cockettes’n (2002)’ located in the ‘psychedelic San Francisco of the 1960s’. “, which will open the 5th edition of Queer Porto – Queer International Film Festival, taking place from 16 to 20 October, at Rivoli Theater, Maus Há habits and the Rectory of the University of Porto.
Organized by the Indiscrete Window Cultural Association, Queer Porto wants to bring together works that “defy reading,” such as Arthur J. Bressan Jr.’s ‘Gay USA’ (1977), Arthur J. Bressan Jr.’s ‘Buddies’ (1985). , first film fiction about AIDS, and Megan Rossman’s The Archivettes (2018), which demonstrates “the importance of material legacies for future memory” in the LGBTI + fight.
The cycle also includes “a tribute to a greater figure in AIDS arts and activism” with ‘Self-Portrait in 23 Rounds: A Chapter in David Wojnarowicz’s Life, 1989-1991’ (2018), documentary by Marion Scemama and François Pain
The so-called Stonewall riots stemmed from spontaneous demonstrations by members of the LGBTI + community, which grew in size and intensity following the violent police invasion of the Stonewall bar in Greenwich Village at dawn on June 28, 1969.
In today’s statement, Queer Porto says that “the past 50 years of the Stonewall riots inevitably lead to a reflection on what half a century of the modern LGBTI + fighting movements have meant, what their political and social achievements (…) , and what did activism mean for queer culture. ”
The closing film of the cycle ends the festival: “El Ángel” (2018), by Luis Ortega.
In competition, Queer Porto will feature eight feature films: ‘A Dog Barking at the Moon’ by Xiang Zi, ‘The Gospel of Eureka’ by Michael Palmieri and Donal Mosher (who will be in Porto), ‘M’ , by Yolande Zauberman, ‘Madame’, by Stéphane Riethauser (also present in Porto), ‘The Man Who Surprised Everyone’, by Natasha Merkulova and Aleksey Chupov, ‘Los Miembros de la Familia’, by Mateo Bendesky, ‘Raia 4’ , by Emiliano Cunha, and ‘Yours in Sisterhood’, by Irene Lusztig.
The jury of the official competition consists of Adriano Baía Nazareth, director of RTP, singer Ana Deus, artist Nuno Ramalho, and artist and curator Susana Chiocca.
The Best Film prize is worth 3,000 euros and is awarded by RTP2, which buys the viewing rights.
In the “In My Shorts” competition, films are screened by students from the Caldas da Rainha School of Arts and Design, the University of Beira Interior, the Lisbon School of Theater and Cinema, the Polytechnic Institute of Porto and the Escola Superior of Technology and Management of Portalegre.
Rivoli will also host a video rehearsal program, including Natalie Tsui’s ‘International Face’ and Darren Elliott-Smith’s ‘Flow / Job’, another director in Porto.

Maus Habits will host the closing party and two Queer Pop sessions, “on the evolution of queer expressions” in music, over the past 50 years.
