Quinta do Bomfim among the best wineries in the world

The jury highlighted the stunning view of the Symington estate, considering a must visit a space full of history.

Quinta do Bomfim – Wine cellar of the Symington family, located in the heart of Alto Douro, near the village of Pinhão – is among the 50 best wineries in the world, according to World’s Best Vineyards, a prize sponsored by the International Wine Challenge, who announced yesterday in London the top 50 of the best wineries open to visitors. The prize aims to highlight the world’s most incredible places to see the vineyards, taste the wines and learn more about its production process.

The award celebrates the legacy of the Symington family’s history – present in the Douro for five generations – that sits at Quinta do Bomfim and reaches its peak when wines are sampled on a terrace with incomparable views of the Douro River. World’s Best Vineyards highlights the fact that Quinta do Bomfim is the cradle of two of the most famous Port wines of the 21st century: Dow’s Vintage 2007, the only Port in this century to receive 100 points from the renowned Wine Spectator, and Vintage 2011 (No. 1 of the TOP 100), which was considered the “Wine of the Year” by the same magazine.

“The guided tour is a must. Start at a museum that tells the history of the estate, the Symington family and their wines. Then choose from three walks in the vineyard that allow you to have unique views of the surroundings and terraces, many of them built by hand in the 18th and 19th centuries. The visit also includes the magnificent lodge. Built in 1896, the space, with its wooden roof complex, stores centenaries of port wine, which are then transported to Vila Nova de Gaia to age, “said the jury.

Quinta do Bomfim had already been awarded the International Wine Tourism Award, the Best of Wine Tourism awards, by the Great Wine Capitals Global Network in 2017. “It is with great satisfaction that we see that the work we have been doing at Quinta do Bomfim since 2015 is once again recognized. We want, above all else, to promote the Douro region that is unique, both for its sublime landscape and for the superior quality wines it provides, “says Johnny Symington, Chairman of Symington.
