Quinta do Peral challenges youngsters to find out if vegetables have water

The Center for Interpretation and Environmental Education “Quinta do Peral” of São Brás de Alportel is part of the Program of the 4th edition of the Week of Education and Initiatives of Environmental Volunteering (SEIVA) that is taking place from 14 to 21 October.

[dropcap]A[/dropcap]n initiative promoted by the Portuguese Environment Agency, through the Regional Hydrographic Administration of the Algarve (ARH), within the scope of the “Environmental Volunteer for Water” project, which aims to mobilize the population of the Algarve to reflect on the main challenges of sustainable development and contribute to the participatory management of resources and to the deepening of scientific and didactic knowledge of teachers and other agents of education for sustainability.

SEIVA 2020 integrates several initiatives, promoted in partnership with several regional and national entities. In São Brás de Alportel, the Center and Environmental Interpretation and Education of the Municipality – “Quinta do Peral” prepared, in this context, the activity “Do the vegetables have water?” which is presented to pre-school and 1st cycle groups, upon prior registration.

The organization explains that this year, due to the difficulties caused by the pandemic crisis, SEIVA will take place in different ways, with a reinforcement of the virtual component and, contrary to the usual, with the presence of a very limited number of participants in the face-to-face actions.

The teams to streamline face-to-face activities make short demonstration videos that can be used later by school communities to work on the environmental themes associated with this year’s theme “Water and Biodiversity – From Theory to Practice”, alluding to the Regional Water Efficiency Plan of the Algarve.

During the initiative, training actions, workshops, environmental volunteering activities (environmental monitoring, removal of invasive plants, cleaning and waste recovery actions), visits to environmental education infrastructures and equipment, a board game session are planned , along with online video projection sessions and exhibitions on environmental issues.
