Rafael Ferreira awarded with honorable mention at the World Sports Photography Awards
Rafael Ferreira, a graduate in Art and Design from the Escola Superior de Educação do Politécnico de Coimbra, was awarded an honourable mention in the Water Sports category at the World Sports Photography Awards 2025.
The distinction was given to a photograph taken during the WSL Tudor Nazaré Big Wave Challenge, held in January 2024, portraying surfer Maya Gabeira.
For Rafael Ferreira, the photo now awarded represents “the smallness of human beings about the ocean and nature in general” and competed in the same category in which Jerome Brouillet, author of the iconic photograph of Brazilian surfer Gabriel Medina during the Olympic Games, won. Paris 2024.
This edition of the World Sports Photography Awards 2025 saw the participation of more than 2,200 professional sports photographers from 96 countries, with more than 13,000 images from more than 60 different sports.
Rafael Ferreira, currently a freelance photographer and official member of the Motocross World Championship (MXGP) media team, has already participated in previous editions of the competition, having been a finalist in the racket sports category in 2023 and Motorsports in 2024.
This distinction represents another important step in the career of Rafael Ferreira, who left the product design industry in 2022 to dedicate himself fully to photography.
