Reissue of the historical essay on “The Revolution of 25 April” by José Medeiros Ferreira
Presented at Livraria Lello, on November 29th, at 9:00 pm
Augusto Santos Silva, Catarina Martins, Francisco Mendes da Silva and Milice Ribeiro dos Santos make up the panel of guests to discuss the work.
40 years after the release of the pioneering “Historical Essay on the April 25 Revolution”, by José Medeiros Ferreira (1942-2014), the work was republished this year and will arrive in debate format at the Most Beautiful Bookstore in the World. A book that reports the Carnation Revolution, by the look of those who accompanied it.
This edition is distinguished by the selection of colour and black and white photographs of 25 de Abril, 1 de Maio 1974 and other moments of the Revolution, authored by Jorge da Silva Horta. The new edition also has a glossary by Manuel Martins, which introduces readers who did not live the Revolution to the extensive list of places, dates, actors, organizations and documents cited throughout the essay by Medeiros Ferreira.
To Augusto Santos Silva: “José Medeiros Ferreira was an active participant in the resistance to the dictatorship and in the Portuguese democratic transition. A historian by profession, he was also a keen and lucid observer of the Carnation Revolution. The book now republished is proof of this.”
From the perspective of Catarina Martins: “Medeiros Ferreira was involved in the revolution and its study and had the generous courage to publish this book still “hot”. This account, populated by a multiplicity of sources and voices, transports the reader to the great revolutionary adventure.”
Francisco Mendes da Silva, states that this work “is one of the great moments of the initial historical prose about our Democracy. Entire prose in the spirit – that of a committed spectator – and clean in style – that of an uncommitted intellectual”.
“José Medeiros Ferreira wrote nine years after the overthrow of the dictatorship, one of the first essays on the pre-constitutional period. In a clear and rigorous prose reflects on the democratic transition, wisely analyzing the complex political dynamics with revealing and relevant details”, adds Milice Ribeiro dos Santos.
In the year that marks the 50th anniversary of 25 April, Livraria Lello opens doors to the presentation of the book that reports one of the events that most marked the history of Portugal, in a celebration of democracy and freedom. Admission is free but subject to registration here.
