Green Havens for Family Picnics in the Lisbon Region

In the heart of the capital, on the banks of the Tagus River, or in the silence of the mountains, some spaces invite you to swap the screen for birdsong and recapture the ritual of a family picnic. With this in mind, the Regional Tourism Board of the Lisbon Region (ERT-RL) has compiled five perfect spots to spread out a blanket and enjoy nature.
The Jamor Urban Park, in Oeiras, combines the freshness of greenery with proximity to the Tagus River. More than just a garden, Jamor is a hub for outdoor living: spacious lawns for spreading blankets, wooded areas offering generous shade, and pedestrian and bike paths that allow for leisure time before or after a meal. It’s a space designed for families, where children and adults can enjoy a variety of activities, from playing in the grass to relaxing strolls along the river.
Tapada das Necessidades, in the heart of Lisbon, is a well-kept secret. Originating in the 18th century, this historic garden is filled with royal memories and exotic botanical species. Among lakes, winding paths, and ancient trees, every corner seems to tell a story. Here, picnics take on a more contemplative tone, ideal for those seeking a peaceful retreat just minutes from the hustle and bustle of the city.
In Alvito Park, in Monsanto, the space was designed for families. Picnic areas and playgrounds integrated into the forested landscape provide moments of fun and relaxation. Between slides, swings, and running through the grass, a picnic transforms into a mini-adventure for the little ones and a moment of relaxation for the adults.
Quinta do Pisão, in Cascais, offers an experience where nature takes centre stage. Located within the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, it preserves rural life with vegetable gardens, orchards, and animals that delight children. Picnics can be accompanied by donkey rides, nature trails, or simply admiring the views of the mountains and sea.
Finally, the Tapada de Mafra, a former hunting ground of the royal family and now a protected area, invites you to a picnic surrounded by history and biodiversity. The silence is interrupted only by the chirping of birds or the distant sound of a deer crossing the meadow. The shaded areas offer comfort for long conversations, while the natural surroundings transport visitors to a time when life flowed slowly.

The ERT-RL’s mission is to enhance and develop the tourism potential of the Lisbon Regional Tourism Area, as well as the integrated management of the destination within the framework of regional tourism development, by the Law, these statutes, the tourism policy guidelines and directives defined by the Government, and the multi-year plans of the central government and its member municipalities.
