Kings, jewels and experiences at the Royal Treasury Museum
Special Programming for International Museum Day, May 18
In May, the Royal Treasury Museum has a special program dedicated to International Museum Day. On this day, visitors can take part in a guided tour of the jewellery collection of D. Fernando II and D. Luís and a workshop on making crown jewels.
During the month, the museum also offers the last class of the “History of Jewellery” course and a workshop on creating pearl necklaces.
On International Museum Day, May 18, all general admission tickets to the Royal Treasury Museum are 50% off. The Museum also has two special activities. From 11 am to 12 pm, there will be a guided tour of the goldsmithing pieces of D. Fernando II and his son D. Luís, two kings known for their passion for the arts and collecting. During this visit, you can see the most recent piece in the Museum’s collection: the relief “The Virgin and Child”, made of Baltic amber, a rare material.
In the afternoon, from 3 pm to 6 pm, the “Royal Workshop: Become a Crown Jeweller” will take place, an activity for families, where participants can create crowns, medals and other pieces worthy of royalty.
The following weekend, on May 24th, from 10:30 am to 5:30 pm, a jewellery workshop will be held with Ana Margarida Carvalho, from PIN – Portuguese Contemporary Jewellery Association. Using simple modelling and assembly techniques, participants will learn how to create paper “pearls” and how to build a unique necklace, combining history and creativity.
