Rema is one of Nigeria’s brightest stars and will perform at Primavera Sound Porto on June 9th.
It has been impossible to escape “Calm Down”, a worldwide success by Rema, a Nigerian musician who conquered the world with his debut album, “Rave & Roses”, in which he collaborated with other stars such as 6LACK, Chris Brown, AJ Tracey, and Yseult.
Rema has just reached 1st place in the national airplay top with “Calm Down”, which thus becomes the most-heard song on Portuguese radio at the moment. The single also won the Double Platinum award in Portugal.
“Calm Down” was also the fastest unsigned Afrobeat song to hit 1 billion streams globally, and made former US President Barack Obama’s 2022 Playlist. An enviable feat for a musician aged just 22.
Rema began to make herself known to the world for her ability to rhyme in freestyles, one of which ended up going viral in 2018, and in 2019 she signed her first professional contract, with a label.
Also in 2019, he released his first EP, self-titled “Rema”, which became instantly a hit in Nigeria and reached number one on the Apple Music platform. The single “Dumebi” was a global success and served as the “catapult” that Rema needed to make herself known to the rest of the world.
The debut album, “Rave & Roses”, includes 16 songs and features a deluxe selection with appearances by: Chris Brown, 6LACK, AJ Tracey, and Yseult. This project paved the way in that subgenre, referred to as Afrorave, and made us aware of this wonderful and strange universe that Rema is creating.
A remix of “Calm Down” with Selena Gomez was also released, which inevitably also became a global success, having reached the 51st and 81st positions at the top of the most listened-to songs on Spotify globally and nationally, respectively, in just two weeks.
Expectations are high for Rema’s concert on June 9 at the Primavera Sound Porto festival.
Rema is indeed one of the brightest stars to emerge from Nigerian music, proving that her talent surpasses all boundaries.
