The Coliseu Porto Ageas presents, in national première, “Requiem”, by the Hungarian composer Frigyes Hidas. The show takes place on March 28, 2023, at 9 pm, and brings together more than 150 artists on stage.
This musical work pays homage to the heroes of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and was first performed on November 3, 1996, the 40th anniversary of the popular uprising against Soviet rule. From its beginnings thought of as a composition that celebrates peace, Frigyes Hidas (1928-2007), dedicated “Requiem” to the victims of all wars throughout history.
“Requiem” features the interpretation of the Portuguese Symphonic Band, two choirs – ESMAE Choir and Costa Cabral Music Academy Choir -, and four soloists: Sílvia Sequeira (soprano), Patrícia Quinta (mezzo-soprano), Pedro Rodrigues (tenor) and Pedro Telles (baritone).
Divided into seven parts, and with grandiose musical moments, amplified by the vocal magnitude of more than a hundred voices, with this work Frigyes Hidas managed to transpose into musical notes all the emotions of a Revolution, culminating with “notes of hope, even in times of pain”.
Dedicated essentially to a wind orchestra, the musical composition maintains the traditional structure of a Requiem and will be conducted by guest conductor Diogo Costa.
At a time when a year of the war is being celebrated in Ukraine, the concert will open with the complementary piece “Hymn for World Peace”, by David Maslanka.
