Nominees for the Amadora Comic Book Awards Announced

Twenty-five works are competing, divided into five categories: Best Foreign Comic Book Published in Portugal; Newcomer Award; Best Fanzine/Independent Publication; Best Comic Book by a Portuguese Author; and Best Portuguese Comic Book Edition.

The winners will be announced on Sunday, October 26th, at 6 p.m., during the regular Amadora Comics Awards Ceremony, held at the Amadora Comics Central Centre (Parque da Liberdade – formerly the Ski Skate Park).

The Best Comics by a Portuguese Author is once again recognised with a cash prize of €5,000.

The jury for the 2025 Amadora Comic Book Awards was composed of three jurors: Hugo Pinto (Jury President and representative of the Municipality of Amadora), literary critic and comic book specialist; Paulo Monteiro, President of the Portuguese Comic Book Club; and Rui Cartaxo, researcher and comic book specialist.

In the categories of Best Fanzine/Independent Publication, Best Comic Book by a Portuguese Author, Best Portuguese Edition, and Newcomer Award, juror Paulo Monteiro (President of the Portuguese Comic Book Club and director of the Beja Comic Book Library) requested to abstain from making nominations to avoid any conflicts of interest, since the work Tales From Nevermore (co-authored by his son) and some fanzines published by the institution he directs were in the running. Now that the nominated works have been verified, the juror will participate in the voting for Best Work by a Portuguese Author, Best Foreign Comic Book published in Portugal, and Best Portuguese Edition, where there are no impediments.

The 25 works nominated for the National Comic Book Awards (PBDA) were therefore chosen from those that received the most nominations from the jury members. Paulo Monteiro’s approach, accepted by the other jurors and the Jury President, reinforced the transparency and integrity that distinguish the PBDA.

The Festival will announce the winners of this edition on October 26th at 6:00 pm, in a ceremony to be held at the event’s Central Center, in Parque da Liberdade (formerly Ski Skate Park).

ABOUT THE AMADORA COMIC BOOK AWARDS (PBDA)

The Amadora Comic Book Awards (PBDA) are an initiative of the Amadora City Council, within the scope of Amadora BD, which has recognized Portuguese and international comic book authors since 1990.

In 2025, Amadora Comics will award a €5,000 prize for the Best Comic Book by a Portuguese Author for the fourth consecutive year.

ABOUT AMADORA HQ

Created in 1990, Amadora Comics is an initiative of the Amadora City Council, which aims to promote comic books. Organized continuously since its inception, Amadora Comics develops an annual program that brings together authors, publishers, agents, and collectors of various nationalities for book signings, exhibitions, launches, workshops, and presentations. Within the scope of Amadora Comics, the Amadora Comics Awards annually recognize outstanding authors and young artists in the comic book scene.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE 36TH EDITION OF AMADORA HQ

There are 13 exhibitions that are part of the 36th edition of Amadora Comics.

At the Central Center (located in Parque da Liberdade), the Festival will feature solo exhibitions highlighting the careers of Luis Louro and Fábio Moon & Gabriel Bá, as well as shows celebrating the anniversaries of some of the comic book heroes—150 years of Zé Povinho, 85 years of Spirit, 75 years of the Peanuts series, and 65 years of the Justice League. There will also be space for content that reveals compelling and impactful stories of women, with exhibitions dedicated to the latest works of authors Cy, Bea Lema, and Zeina Abirached.

At the Artur Bual Municipal Gallery, two retrospective exhibitions by Alice Geirinhas and Diniz Conefrey will be on display, and at the Bedeteca, an exhibition will be dedicated to the album that won the Revelation Award at the 2024 Amadora Comic Book Awards: Amor, by Filipa Beleza.

In 2025, Amadora BD will expand its book signing hours. In addition to the usual weekend openings, the Festival will offer additional sessions on the two Fridays of the event, from 6 PM to 8 PM. Another new feature is Comic Book Hour (Monday to Thursday, from 6 PM to 8 PM, where visitors can benefit from additional discounts of up to 15% on book purchases). Both events will take place at the Festival’s Central Center – Parque da Liberdade.
