Richard Strange of Doctors of Madness plays in Coimbra and Porto

The founder of the Doctors of Madness, Richard Strange, plays on Tuesday in Coimbra and on the 14th in Porto, in a concert that is also a career path, where he met names like Sex Pistols or Depeche Mode.

In his short biography, Richard Strange claims that he was “stolen by the Sex Pistols,” has cooked spaghetti with Sophia Loren, paid the Depeche Mode £ 15 a half-hour for his Cabaret Futura in London’s Soho, and destroyed a gallery of art with actor Jack Nicholson.

On Tuesday, the founder of the Doctors of Madness, protopunk band of the 1970s, works at the Gil Vicente Academic Theater in Coimbra and, on the 14th, presents himself at the Catholic Circle of Operators from Oporto (CCOP). In the middle, he will give a conference on Friday at the College of Arts of the University of Coimbra, the entity responsible for the musician’s arrival in Portugal.

“Richard Strange was a forerunner of punk, considered the missing link between glam and punk and has worked not only important for what he did as a musician, but also for what he allowed to happen. He created the Futura Cabaret, like Depeche Mode, and with the Doctors of Madness was supported by the New Order. More recently, he has curated at Tate Britain and has had several appearances in the cinema, “said the director of the College of Arts, António Olaio, considering this musician “the character hinge” between everything that was emerging in the culture of London in the 1970s and 1980s.

The second time that Richard Strange moves to Coimbra, at the invitation of the College of Arts, the musician presents the show “An Accent Waiting to Happen”, a career for more than 30 years of the British musician, with a lot of history and “gossip” to the mixture.

“He comes to the solo, with only the guitar, and he will have access to what he did and where he went. He is a storyteller, a talker and has a very rich path. and is a character in itself, brilliant, “said Antonio Olaio, who participated, along with the musician John Taborda, in the return concert of the Doctors of Madness in 2017 in London.

In addition to his work as a musician, Richard Strange has a number of film roles and is also a curator, journalist, and writer, having edited his memoirs in 2005 under the title “Strange: Punks and Drunks and Flicks and Kicks”.

Throughout his life, he worked with artists such as Tom Waits, Marianne Faithfull, William Burroughs, and Damon Albarn.
