Two million lamps, a thirty-meter tree at Terreiro do Paço and concerts by Richie Campbell, Branko and the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra are bets of the capital for the Christmas and New Year’s Eve programming.
The program was presented today in the City Hall of Lisbon, where Mayor Fernando Medina (PS) said that the streets of the capital are decorated with two million and 150 thousand LED bulbs, in a set of “more than 215 kilometres of illumination “.
The lights will decorate 43 arteries, mainly in downtown, but also in areas such as Alvalade or Almirante Reis Avenue.
Although it is an increase over last year, the Lisbon Chamber says that the fact that there are more lights in the streets, squares and avenues of the city “does not correspond to a significant increase in energy consumption.”
The illuminations were linked today, next to the tree that decorates the Terreiro do Paço, around 6:10 pm, and will continue to be connected until January 6, in an investment of 800 thousand euros.
Also, the Terreiro do Paço will be the stage of the concerts at the end of the year.
December 29 will be animated by ‘dj’ and producer Branko, who will have as guests Carlão, Sara Tavares, Dino D’Santiago and Cachupa Psicadélica.
The next day, the stage will be taken by the Metropolitan Orchestra of Lisbon, directed by maestro Pedro Amaral, who will join the tenor Carlos Guilherme and the soprano Elisabete Matos.
On the last day of the year, the animation begins at 10:00 pm, with presenters Joana Azevedo and Diogo Beja.
Before the start of the year, the stage will be by Daniel Pereira Cristo, who invites Tatanka, João Só and Ana Bacalhau to join him. Already after the sound of the twelve noises and the usual fireworks, the show continues through the voices of Richie Campbell, Dengaz, Mishlawi, Plutonius and Dj Dadda, who only leave the stage at 2:00 a.m.
The program of Christmas will feature a window show competition, which brings together 46 contestants in 11 parishes, church concerts and at the airport, animation in public spaces, theatre, opera or meditation sessions at Cinema São Jorge.
In what it dubbed as the “most awaited press conference” of the year, the mayor emphasized that Natal’s programming is “known to be rich and diverse.”
Fernando Medina also said that together the Christmas and New Year programs will constitute an investment of 670 thousand euros, but according to the president of EGEAC – Equipment Management and Cultural Animation Company, “a very substantial part of this value will be ensured for sponsorships. ”
Joana Cardoso also highlighted that at the beginning of the year “glass bottles will not be allowed” in Terreiro do Paço, similar to what happened last year and that reusable glasses will be used.
In terms of security measures for that night, where several thousand people go out, the mayor said that “they will be treated with great care, in articulation with the PSP and according to the defined standards, so that all people and feel good and have effective security. ”
Therefore, it will be adopted the “device that is usual in these times”, and “everything will be prepared for the night to go well,” added Medina.
Also, Praça do Município will have a Christmas market, a merry-go-round, and animation, as well as an exhibition with “the best first Christmas pages” of Diário de Notícias, from December 1st to January 6th.
Between December 1 and January 1, the Eduardo VII Park will host the ‘Wonderland’ Lisbon 2018, which brings to the capital a Ferris wheel and an ecological ice rink.
