Rio de Janeiro postpones Carnaval of 2021

The 2021 edition of the famous Rio de Janeiro’s Carnaval, scheduled for February, has been postponed indefinitely due to the covid-19 pandemic, which is still very active in Brazil, a official announced on Thursday.

The last time the Rio Carnaval was suspended was in 1912, after the death of the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

In July, several samba schools in the city had already refused to parade at the Carnaval of 2021 if a vaccine against the new coronavirus was not yet available.

The immense manpower required for each show has already been hindered by the restrictions on social gatherings that the governor of Rio de Janeiro imposed in March.

Even with these measures, the metropolitan region, which is home to 13 million people, has so far registered more than 15,000 deaths by covid-19.
