After her debut in music with “dia depois outro”, Rita Cortezão releases “lisbolha”.
The theme is now available on all digital platforms.
It is safe to say that Rita Cortezão is one of the most promising voices of the new generation of Portuguese music, with a very secure and unique artistic identity and a songwriting style that reveals a unique artistic maturity and genuineness. Rita Cortezão continues to reveal themes from her debut album, which has the Discos Submarinos label and is produced by Benjamim.
“lisbolha”, is born from the restlessness and duality of feelings that the artist has for the city of Lisbon. According to Rita, it is a “rebellious song”, which conveys the feeling of having grown beyond one’s hometown. The lyrics cover different moods, from apathy (“I know it’s beautiful but tomorrow nothing will have changed“), through irony (“I’m going for a walk; I’ll meet a friend; there’s nothing new“), through anger (“this city is a light that doesn’t reach us“) and culminating in detachment (“every distance is a call“).
Similar from day to day, the theme reinforces the importance of the written word in Rita Cortezão’s artistic work in an attempt to create a safe place for herself, where she can be as sincere as possible, as well as find unlikely ways to describe universal experiences and give new meanings to certain commonplaces.
“lisbolha” will be part of, together with “dia depois outro”, the first original recording by the 24-year-old singer-songwriter from Lisbon, “tudo, um pouco”, scheduled for release in 2025, composed of songs written and composed by Rita Cortezão.
Biography
Rita Cortezão is the artistic name of singer and composer Rita Cortesão Monteiro, born in Lisbon 24 years ago. Rita started playing the piano at the age of 5 and has been writing songs for as long as she can remember, both in baths when she was just over that age, and in the privacy of her bedroom, in an uncertain search for answers to her teenage torments. He is currently working on his first album, together with musician and producer Benjamim, with vulnerability being his biggest drive. The songs he creates reflect varied attempts to understand what separates and mixes his inner world with the outer one, always inexhaustible and curious. Rita writes, sings and plays with her eyes closed, wandering with her voice to some meeting point with the other, someone or something known, unknown, a new and chilling mystery.
She studied at the Hot Clube de Portugal Jazz School, where she graduated in singing and piano in 2022, having studied with names such as Margarida Campelo and Beatriz Nunes. From his father’s record collection, he sought out the most varied references to pop music, which always crossed paths with his interest in classical music and jazz. He delved deeper into the craft of songwriting in a songwriting class taught by Joana Espadinha and João Firmino. He took the songwriting course at the School of Song taught by Adrianne Lenker. He sang choirs for Benjamim and João Borsch and was part of the Primeira Dama band in the presentation of “Superstar Desilusão” at the São Luiz Theater. He gave his first solo show in July this year, at Casa do Comum, as part of an event held by Coletivo Markize. In September he played at the Discos Submarinos festival.
She has a degree in General Studies from the Faculty of Arts of the University of Lisbon, with a Major in Comparative Arts and Cultures. He has a postgraduate degree in Writing Arts from FCSH and is currently studying for a master’s degree in Aesthetics and Artistic Studies, specializing in Cinema and Photography, at the same institution.
