Robert Chemonges wins and scores Porto’s Marathon record

The Ugandan Robert Chemonges today beat the record of the Porto marathon, winning the race in a time of 2:09 p.m., beating 46 seconds to the previous maximum, which belonged to Kenyan Philemoh Baaru.

Chemonges imposed on Oliver Irabaruta of Burundi (2: 09.48 hours) and Ethiopian Fikadu Kebede (2: 10.41), second and third classified, surpassing the previous record set by Baaru in 2011 from 2: 09.51 hours.

In addition to the 42,195 kilometres of the main event, this event also features a 15-kilometre run and a six-kilometre walk intended for all age groups and without competitive ends.

According to the organization, about 16,000 people from 75 nationalities (41% of the registered international athletes) were enrolled in the three events, with the longest distance slope having about 6,000 participants.

The 15th edition of the Porto Marathon runs through arteries of three municipalities: Porto, Matosinhos and Vila Nova de Gaia.
