Roberto Benigni receives Golden Lion career in Venice
Roberto Benigni, 68, is an unparalleled and unprecedented figure in the Italian performing arts scene, who stood out since his debut for his innovative and irreverent approach to rules and traditions.
Benigni, who excels in the field of comedy, began his artistic career in the 1970s, in theater and on television. At the time, on the small screen, he entered the series “Onda Libera”, suspended because of an eschatological moment subject to censure, and “L’altra domenica”.
At the end of that decade, he made his film debut as an actor, in the film “Berlinguer, I love you” (1977), by Bertolucci. “Tu mi turbi”, from 1983, represents Benigni’s debut as a director and records the arrival on the scene of actress Nicoletta Braschi, life partner and protagonist of other films he shot.
The Venice festival recalls that “Life is beautiful” is still the most popular film in Italian cinema, with 9.7 million viewers.
Federico Fellini, Jim Jarmusch, Woody Allen, and Matteo Garrone are three of the directors with whom Benigni also worked as an actor.
