Rock in Rio Lisbon opens doors thinking about the future
Rock in Rio Lisbon 2022
With less than a year to open again, the festival returns to remember that “The World Will Be Ours Again” and for the first time publicly reinforces its commitment to the future by setting new sustainability goals until 2030 and presenting a new City of Rock, which arrives ready to materialize the festival’s better world vision in all spaces of the venue.
The reunion is scheduled for June 18, 19, 25 and 26, 2022, with more music (distributed by Palco Mundo, Galp Music Valley, Rock Street, Palco Yorn, Continente Chef’s Garden and Super Bock Digital Stage) and new content (Game Square, Ferris Wheel Flash Flashes, ESC Online Sports Bar and 7Up Slide).

Galp Music Valley was another highlight of this afternoon’s presentation, bringing a new concept that will take the audience on an experience through the cities of the future to the sound of artists such as Linda Martini, Bárbara Tinoco, IZA, Ney Matogrosso, The Black Mamba, Delfins, Moullinex & Xinobi, Mundo Segundo & Sam the Kid, Funk Orchestra, Edu Monteiro and MC Rebecca, among others to be announced soon.
It was 36 years ago that Rock in Rio sang for the first time “may life begin now, and the world be ours again”. Today, after two consecutive postponements in Lisbon and one in Rio de Janeiro, due to the pandemic, these lyrics take on even greater meaning and the festival returns ready to reopen its doors and, through music and entertainment, give a stage to relevant conversations that contribute to building a better future.
Believing that this future must be built today – a construction that the festival began 36 years ago and has been reinforcing since the launch of the project “For a Better World” 20 years ago, or the embrace of sustainability when it became 15 years ago. at the first major event to offset its Carbon Footprint – Rock in Rio now reinforces its commitment to go even further, announcing a set of sustainability goals until 2030 that aims to increase its positive impact on the social, environmental and economic.

In line with the Sustainable Development Goals promoted by the UN, these goals are already beginning to be achieved in the 2022 editions of the festival – in Portugal and Brazil – and are proposed, over the next few years, to train 100,000 people, ser lixo zero in all editions of the festival (0% garbage in landfill), zero food waste in all editions, involve 100% of stakeholders in its sustainability policy, be a 100% accessible, inclusive and plural event, and guarantee all the adequate safety, health and well-being conditions for 100% of those involved in the construction of Cidade do Rock.
“Since 1985, the festival has made a commitment to society: that of being active agents in building a better world and taking this with us wherever we go. Today, we want to go even further in what we understand to be the responsibility of each one of us, and by making these goals public, cause the transformation of mindsets and behaviours throughout the production chain, also serving as an example and inspiration for the public,” explains Roberta Medina, Executive Vice President of Rock in Rio.

To materialize these goals and provoke conversations that the festival believes are increasingly relevant in building a more sustainable future, with better quality of life for everyone, in addition to having created a Sustainability Plan with all the actions to be implemented, Rock in Rio Lisboa also transformed the City of Rock into a mirror of his vision of the better world. In this sense, the public can expect new spaces and new conversations in the festival grounds which, on June 18, 19, 25 and 26, 2022, will once again reverberate with music, entertainment, humour, joy, love and hope.
In addition to the World Stage, where stars such as Foo Fighters, Duran Duran, a-ha, Black Eyed Peas, Ellie Goulding, Post Malone, Anitta, Jason Derulo, among others, will pass, the 9th edition of Rock in Rio Lisboa will present a new Rock Street, a new Stage Yorn, a new Chef’s Garden, a new Game Square proposal, new content on an even bigger Super Bock Digital Stage, new entertainment formats at the ESC Online Sports Bar and even the long-awaited debut of new Giant Flashing Wheel and the return of the 7Up Slide. But one of the highlights of the presentation event that took place this afternoon was the Galp Music Valley, which presents itself with a new concept and the first names already confirmed: Linda Martini, Ney Matogrosso, The Black Mamba, Bárbara Tinoco, IZA, Delfins, Moullinex & Xinobi, Mundo Segundo & Sam The Kid, Edu Monteiro, Funk Orchestra, and MC Rebeca.
“2022 will certainly be a very special year for Rock in Rio. We will celebrate the Portugal and Brazil editions in the same year, we will open the doors to a City of Rock with new proposals, new stages and relevant conversations, and we will do the same again. we did it in 1985 – lighting up the audience and showing that the show only exists when the whole is added”, adds Roberta Medina.

Rock in Rio Sustainability Goals by 2030
In the year that celebrates 20 years of the “For a Better World” project, Rock in Rio publicly assumes, for the first time, the commitment to go even further in this mission, announcing a set of sustainability goals.
After establishing itself as the first major music event in the world to offset its Carbon Footprint (15 years ago) and being certified ISO 20121 – Sustainable Events, the festival’s efforts in the path of sustainability have not stopped here and its legacy is already part of milestones such as having reduced fuel consumption by 62% – even having doubled its size-, being Zero Waste in the Lisbon editions and having reduced 10 tons of waste in 2018 with the adoption of the reusable cup, have facilitated access to health for more than 500,000 people, or invested 35 million euros in social and environmental projects, which benefited 1 million people, supported more than 200 entities, financed 28 UNESCO projects, and helped 56,000 beneficiaries annually, throughout the world.
Now, in addition to continuing its Sustainability Plan, the festival sets ambitious goals for 2030, which essentially focus on themes that Rock in Rio believes are the most necessary to feed conversations that will become increasingly relevant: education, food systems, climate change, circular economy, inclusion and plurality. To achieve these goals, there are already several designed initiatives that will start to be implemented now, and in conjunction with Rock in Rio partners, namely promoting internships at the festival for people in economic and social need, giving a perspective of the future and preparing them for the events market; reduce waste generation by eliminating primary packaging and encouraging the circular economy among partners in the City of Rock; promote seasonal and local foods, promote the right dose to avoid food waste, and continue to donate food leftovers; improve accessibility and make it clear in the community that Rock in Rio is an event for everyone; promote adequate rest, hydration and nutrition among all teams present at Cidade do Rock; and involve all partners in the festival’s sustainability policy, through dedicated campaigns.
“For each edition, we will define intermediate goals – steps to reach the 2030 goals, supported by our Sustainability Plan, where we will gather the actions that we are committed to implementing. This Plan is distributed by all our partners and will also be available on our website, as well as the Sustainability Policy and other tools that everyone can have access to to be inspired in their projects and day-to-day”, says Dora Palma, Sustainability Manager at Rock in Rio.

In the new City of Rock, the future is the present time. With the growing and urgent challenge of adapting large urban centres so that by 2050 they will be able to accommodate two-thirds of the population (as pointed out in several studies), Galp Music Valley intends to share proposals and solutions for a future that does not exist in the City of Rock. it is as far away as some might imagine. Through a new stage design, activities and activations around it, concepts, tips and suggestions for urban, healthy and sustainable attitudes will be explored that are at the base of the conversations that address the “cities of the future” – such as energy transition, mobility sustainable or food systems.
“Galp is aligned with Rock in Rio’s mission and has the objective of “Together we will regenerate the future”. We will transport to this festive environment the movement of transformation and energy transition that we are making as a company contributing to the sustainable mobility of festival-goers and with green energy that will feed our presence at the event”, says Teresa Abecasis, Administrator Galp.
Music continues to be the transforming energy of this stage and it is also through this that Galp Music Valley seeks to raise awareness, giving space to different voices and different visions. Some of these names were announced today, with other artists still to be confirmed. On the first day of the festival, June 18, the Portuguese Linda Martini is already confirmed, a band very cherished by the public and the press since its formation and who recently released three songs that will be part of their next album – “E não sobrou ninguém”, “Horário de Verão” e “Taxonomia”; The Black Mamba, a band whose path was inevitably marked by the victory of the Festival da Canção, in 2021, as interpreters of the song written by Pedro Tatanka, “Love Is On My Side”; and Moullinex & Xinobi, the duo that best represents the national electronic scene and will be responsible for closing the first night in the valley. On the 19th of June, Edu Monteiro, a Brazilian artist who is making an unavoidable career in London, will take the stage, also becoming a “must-have” in the Galp Music Valley lineup; IZA, one of the greatest voices in current Brazilian music with a legion of fans who follow her not only for her musical career but because she is already recognized as the leader of the new generation, and who is confirmed to be on the World Stage of the Rio de Janeiro edition, in September 2022. Also on this day, singer and composer Bárbara Tinoco, whose path in Portuguese music continues to bear fruit, and the Funk Orchestra, the first orchestra of this generation, perform at Galp Music Valley. funk of the world was created to honour the 30 years of the Funk Brasil movement and that promises a big party in the most popular valley in the city.
Rock in Rio Lisboa 2021.09.30 ©Patrícia Rodrigues – iNeewsThe second weekend kicks off with concerts by big names that have marked – and continue to mark – generations. The Portuguese Delfins will have their long-awaited comeback on June 25th, promising to put Galp Music Valley sing in unison to the sound of so many hits after more than 35 years of career. On the same day, on the same stage, the unavoidable and charismatic Ney Matogrosso also passes by, who finally visits Rock in Rio Lisboa for a concert that will certainly not leave anyone indifferent. Finally, on June 26, two of the biggest names in national hip hop will join Galp Music Valley: Mundo Segundo & Sam The Kid, who will now perform together in a concert that will celebrate the reunion and will be registered in the memory of festival-goers. Also on this day is the pop and funk singer melody MC Rebecca, in a premiere at the festival that promises to shake this stage.
In addition to the news from Galp Music Valley, the City of Rock comes with new proposals for the rest of the venue. After having already passed through the United Kingdom, Brazil, Africa and other regions of the world, the new Rock Street has now arrived to embrace the world and its cultural diversity, in a journey without geographical barriers. In this eclectic street, the doors will open to the world of World Music and a stage, a scenography and an artistic proposal will be presented that reflect the richness of plurality, whether in age, gender, race, nationality or vision.
And because talking about the future is also talking about dreams, there is a new stage in Cidade do Rock that aims to give light to hidden talents and to broaden horizons. The Yorn Stage arrives with a fresh and urban look, a new programming proposal that combines different entertainment formats and brings a community-oriented look, illuminating their talents and promoting their dreams.

One of the greatest hits of the last edition of Rock in Rio Lisboa will also be back. This year, the stage that gave space to the digital world presents an upgrade, approaching with great humour some of the most complex themes in the universe where we have been living more recently – the digital. On the Super Bock Digital Stage, topics such as digital inclusion will be addressed through different entertainment formats, maintaining the mission of bringing some of the online phenomena offline.
And speaking of phenomena, inclusion and plurality, nothing better reflects these concepts than Game Square’s proposal – the “stage” that brings generations and languages together. Just as music is considered a universal language, gaming is also nowadays. In this space in Cidade do Rock, the positive and energetic side of gaming will be experienced, showing how it brings people together – regardless of age, gender, geography – and addressing topics such as the importance of learning new languages.
But the “game” doesn’t end here and finally making its debut in the City of Rock will be the ESC Online Sports Bar, a space that, in addition to the planned activations around the world of sport, will promote the fair play environment, bridging the gap between the importance of a positive attitude not only in the game but in building a better future.
There’s still more to come at Rock in Rio Lisboa. It is already known that gastronomy is one of the points on which the festival has invested so much in recent editions, with the public looking for increasingly diversified solutions. This year, there is a new space dedicated to this theme – Continente Chef’s Garden, which promises to bring flavour and awareness to the table, with proposals from several Portuguese chefs who take into account topics as current as food systems and healthy, sustainable food and diverse.

To conclude the tour of the City of Rock, it is necessary to highlight two other elements without which Rock in Rio Lisboa would not be the same festival. After it was announced that the Ferris Wheel would come back differently in the next edition, in June 2022 one of the festival-goers’ favourite entertainment will finally see the light of day and will arrive with two new features: it celebrates the entry of the Pisca-Pisca like in Rock in Rio Lisbon and brings with it a new dynamic, with surprise cabins and different experiences and prizes in each one.
Returning to the starting point, if there’s one thing you need to have when it comes to challenges and goals, it’s courage. And next to the World Stage, this quality speaks even more loudly, more specifically at 15m high, where festival-goers will be able to continue taking the bravest “jump” in the City of Rock, at 7Up Slide.
In addition to all these spaces, Cidade do Rock will continue to have the VIP Area, as well as Rock in Rio Premium Club’(Tables) and Rooftops, as well as all the food points spread throughout the venue, leisure areas and various activation points. the brand with the most varied activities and surprises.
