Rock in Rio Lisboa celebrates 20 years with special edition at Parque Tejo Lisboa and Ed Sheeran

20 years have passed since the first edition of Rock in Rio Lisboa. Two decades of stories, memories, great concerts, and new entertainment formats.

There were 9 editions, more than 3 million visitors to the City of Rock, more than 225 million euros of investment, more than 87 thousand jobs created in the country, around 5.6 million euros invested in socio-environmental causes and numerous actions, including installing photovoltaic panels in schools, burning forest reforestation projects, equipping hospitals and IPSS, building sensory rooms for young people, among others. In 2024, the festival that debuted in Lisbon in 2004, is back for a special edition, with great news including a new location and the first confirmed headliner!

On the 15th, 16th, 22nd and 23rd of June 2024, a new City of Rock will open its doors in Parque Tejo Lisboa, in an ode to the city that hosted the festival in 2004, with the Tagus River and the Vasco da Gama Bridge in the backdrop of bottom. An invitation initially launched by Lisbon City Council, to mark a special date, making Rock in Rio Lisboa the first major event to occupy the recent Parque Tejo Lisboa, as happened 20 years ago, when the festival was established in Parque da Bela Vista.

The news doesn’t stop here! 20 years deserve a worthy soundtrack and, therefore, the festival invited Ed Sheeran, who performed for the first time in Portugal in 2014, precisely on the Palco Mundo do Rock in Rio Lisboa, to return to Cidade do Rock. The artist is thus the first name confirmed for the 10th edition of the festival, being the headliner on June 16th and bringing great hits and his most recent songs, from the album Autumn Variations to Palco Mundo.

“Looking back and seeing Rock in Rio’s journey since its arrival in Portugal in 2004, how much the festival and the market have evolved, the challenges we overcame, the legacy we have already left, all the people we have marked and the projects we have Over the years we have created and supported things that would allow us to help transform lives, that’s what makes it worth it. And that’s what we want to celebrate, with all those who made these 20 years possible: the public, of all ages, beliefs, and styles; the artists, from rock to pop to the latest digital phenomena; without obviously forgetting the behind-the-scenes protagonists, who are all those who work to put the festival on its feet, and the partners who make it all possible and who dive in with us with the same commitment, dedication and desire to make a better world. “, says Roberta Medina, Executive Vice President of Rock in Rio. “And as it’s not every day we turn 20, we’re going to do what we know how to do best, party!, in a special edition: in a new space that will allow bring more entertainment, more comfort, bathrooms, food and rest areas, taking the public experience to another level, and which will also allow us to bring new proposals into the City of Rock, which at the start already brings Ed Sheeran on the soundtrack! We couldn’t have a better start!” she adds.

“This will, without a doubt, be a historic edition, arising from the invitation of the Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, to debut Parque Tejo Lisboa as a venue for major post-World Youth Day events while also taking advantage of this opportunity to recover the Bela Vista meadow, a need that we have indicated for many years”, he concludes.

Roberta Medina also highlights that “we are passionate about Bela Vista and we are happy to see that in 2025 the city will have its two large spaces for events even more valued. Our relationship with the local community of Bela Vista will continue as it has always been, we will continue to work with the community in the positive promotion of the neighbourhood and its talents, in generating employment, access to culture and much more.”
“I couldn’t be more pleased with this announcement of the next edition of Rock in Rio taking place at Parque Tejo Lisboa. Reinforced, also, by a date as important as the 20th anniversary of this festival, which already has an umbilical relationship with the city. After the enormous success of WYD, with unique images and scenes that reached the whole world, we now have the opportunity for Parque Tejo Lisboa to host Rock in Rio, thus allowing Parque da Bela Vista to be restored next year. Parque Tejo Lisboa is a new park created for the city, but it is also a new space created for major events in Lisbon. We couldn’t start in the best way.”, confirms Carlos Moedas, Mayor of Lisbon.


The doors of the new Cidade do Rock, in Parque Tejo Lisboa, open to the public on the 15th, 16th, 22nd and 23rd of June 2024. This new location will maintain the capacity of the previous venue, in Parque da Bela Vista, for 80,000 people . The Palco Mundo clearing area will have approximately the same dimensions as the Palco Mundo clearing at Parque da Bela Vista, but an additional 30,000 m2 will be used to provide comfort for the public to walk between attractions and to introduce new attractions. This new location will offer the public an improved experience since the space is larger, thus allowing for increased rest and leisure areas and more fluid circulation within the venue, in addition to enabling better accessibility due to the flatter terrain.
“We are studying Parque Tejo Lisboa in detail in search of the best locations for our spaces, with the main concern of guaranteeing the public a comfortable experience and ensuring the well-being of the region’s residents! We will therefore distribute our stages in order to take advantage of the natural amphitheatres that the park already has, making the best use of the land.”, explains Ricardo Acto, Vice-President of Operations at Rock World.

The new Cidade do Rock will also allow for improvements to Parque Tejo Lisboa in terms of infrastructure, which will be built for the event and which will subsequently remain in the Park as shadows and sanitary infrastructure.

But the news continues: the iconic Palco Mundo, which this edition will benefit from a stunning backdrop between the Tagus River and the Vasco da Gama Bridge, will continue to receive the greatest national and international artists (with the presence of Ed Sheeran in this edition) and will feature an audiovisual show commemorating 20 years taking place daily, in the clearing of this stage. Galp Music Valley is also back in Cidade do Rock, thus confirming Galp as the Main Sponsor of another edition of Rock in Rio Lisboa. The stage will continue to bring national and international musical proposals of even greater relevance, for all ages and musical styles.

Another novelty for this edition is that Cidade do Rock will have a new Stage, which appears as part of the festival’s strategy to reinforce the musical offering by bringing even more large-scale concerts to its vast entertainment menu.

Continuing the visit to the new City of Rock, the Super Bock Digital Stage will also be present at the festival’s 20th anniversary edition, which will offer a great entertainment experience, with music, dance and humor, projecting the most viral moments of the past 20 years and featuring the internet stars who will shape the next 20.

Rock Street is also back and returns with the same provocative tone, to talk about the encounter between people and technology and how we value humanity and use technology in a constructive and healthy way. Other spaces that proved to be a success upon their debut, in 2022, will also move to the new venue, namely the Chef’s Garden, which will bring the best of Portugal through gastronomy into Cidade do Rock; and the ESC Online Sports Bar, which gains greater prominence this edition as it coincides with the European football championship period.

But there is more news: a debut in this new City of Rock is Route 85. If Rock in Rio in Portugal celebrates 20 years, we cannot forget that its history, in fact, began two decades earlier, more specifically in 1985, when Roberto Medina founded the festival in Rio de Janeiro, giving voice to an oppressed generation that had just left the military dictatorship. 40 years later, the festival has traveled the world, maintains a base in Brazil and another in Portugal and has already left a legacy in all the countries it has visited. On this Route 85, the public will be able to learn more about the history of what is now one of the biggest music events in the world, photograph several giant scenographic elements that will certainly fill Instagram pages (such as the famous muddy sneakers, one of the city’s trademark images). first edition in the festival’s history), watch a short documentary film of the festival at the Rota cinema, celebrate your union with Elvis in the Las Vegas-style chapel, among other activities.

But Rock in Rio is not just about music and entertainment. It is known that the festival is also guided by its commitment to the future and that in 2001 it launched the social project “For a Better World” as a way of formalizing that which had been in his DNA since 1985. Since then, the festival has been expanding its activities, adopting and encouraging practices that support the collective and contribute to the construction of a better world, teaming up with companies, associations and partners that have the same vision. In this edition, Mundo Melhor will also be celebrated and will have its own space: in the already iconic Pala do Parque Tejo Lisboa, the festival will create an area that explores these 20 years from a socio-environmental perspective, remembering the projects that are part of the legacy of festival.

The Pala do Parque Tejo Lisboa is already an icon of this space, having great symbolic importance for the city. We wanted to highlight this importance and give it a central role in this special edition of Rock in Rio Lisboa, having been the location chosen to materialize the concept of our campaign, “All in Rio”, and our purpose for a better world. It will thus be the stage for Mundo Melhor, where it will be possible to revisit the various initiatives developed – from Rock in Rio Escola Solar (which in 2009 received the Energy Globe Award), through reforestation projects, solidarity auctions and experiences with artists, initiatives that allowed equipping hospitals and IPSS, construction of sensory rooms for young people, among many others – and reflecting ideas and commitments for the future”, reveals Roberta Medina.

In addition to all these spaces, Cidade do Rock‘s offer is only complete with the presence of the famous Pisca Pisca ferris wheel and the 7Up slide, which will once again provide the most incredible flight in all of Cidade do Rock and all of Lisbon. There will also be space in the venue for the already traditional and sophisticated Gato Preto VIP Area, for the rooftops, for the iconic fountain, one of the most photographed places in the venue, and for a Premium Club (boxes with a privileged view of the World Stage).


In this edition of great celebrations, the first major revelation on the line-up is the acclaimed British artist Ed Sheeran, who returns precisely 10 years later to the festival that saw him shine in his memorable debut in Portugal.

Ed Sheeran has a career full of successes, awards and millions of fans around the world. Songs like “Shape of You”, “Thinking Out Loud” and “Perfect” are anthems that transcended borders and won over fans of all ages. He has sold more than 56 million albums and 150 million singles worldwide. Through his style that fuses provocative compositions, universal pop and influences from various genres, he manages to reach beyond his audience, transcending generations.

Since bursting onto the UK circuit in 2010 with his “No.5 Collaborations Project”, the Suffolk-born artist has won fans across the world through his unparalleled versatility and songwriting ability. Now with seven consecutive UK number one albums – ‘+’ (2011), ‘x’ (2014), ‘÷’ (2017), ‘No.6 Collaborations Project’ (2019), ‘=’ (2021) ), ‘-‘ (2023) and Autumn Variations (2023) – Sheeran continues to reaffirm his status as one of the most in-demand pop stars on the planet.

Ahead of the release of ‘=’ (October 2021) – an album that has already surpassed six million global sales – Sheeran secured two UK No. 1 singles with ‘Bad Habits’ and ‘Shivers’, which topped the Official UK Singles Chart for a combined total of 15 weeks. Over two decades, Rock in Rio Lisboa has been a beacon of music, culture and entertainment in Portugal and beyond its borders. Since its inception in 2004, the festival has grown and evolved, becoming an invaluable part of the country’s musical culture. With nine historic editions in Portugal alone (22 in the world), more than 1,100 artists, an audience of more than 3 million people, and the creation of more than 87,000 direct and indirect jobs, Rock in Rio Lisboa has established itself as a event that transcends music and becomes a driving force for the economy, culture and social development of Portugal.

In its first edition outside Brazil, in Lisbon, the event was an immediate success, transforming Cidade do Rock into a point of reference and putting Parque da Bela Vista on the map, previously unknown to the majority of Lisbon residents. In 2014, the festival celebrated 10 years with an epic moment that brought together The Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen on the same stage. It was also the year in which the festival reached a significant milestone by reaching 500 thousand fans on Facebook, being the first event of its kind in Portugal to reach that number.
The 2018 edition brought innovations, such as Music Valley and the Worten Game Ring, and in 2019, although no edition of the festival took place, there were special celebrations of the 15th anniversary, including a calendar of actions such as the Galp Music Valley Sessions and the remarkable Celebration at the Belém Tower.

In the chapter “For a Better World”, much can be written about these 20 years. If the numbers speak, they will count more than 87 thousand jobs created in the country (directly and indirectly) and more than 5.6 million euros invested in socio-environmental causes. Along the way, there are also several national and international recognitions within the scope of the festival’s power to achieve, in terms of sustainability, having recently been distinguished with the Iberian Festival Awards 2023 in the “Best National and Iberian Sustainability Award” category; in 2018, Sê-Lo Verde from the Ministry of the Environment for the good sustainability practices implemented; in 2017 the Global Conservation Hero Award from Conservation International for the Amazonia Live project; in 2009 he received the Energy Globe Award for the Rock in Rio Escola Solar project. In 2013 it was the culmination of all the work, having obtained certification in the ISO 20121 standard – Sustainable Events.

And to kick things off with a flourish, Rock in Rio Lisboa also presents a new communication campaign that aims to convey 20 years of emotions, values and desire for a better world, in the celebrations of such a special date. “All in Rio” is the concept that reflects what Rock in Rio has always been and seeks to continue to be: a multi-experience, aggregating, inclusive platform that, through music and entertainment, addresses topics relevant to the construction of the collective future that we want to build.
