Rodrigo Amarante launches new album on July 16th and announces tour in 2022

Rodrigo Amarante releases the awaited new album “Drama” on July 16th and announces a tour in 2022 with two dates in Portugal

[dropcap]R[/dropcap]odrigo Amarante is pleased to announce the release of his new album “Drama”, on July 16, by the publisher Polyvinyl, which will also reissue the acclaimed debut album “Cavalo” (2014), an extraordinary collection of intimate songs, in which “each instrument breathes and each sound mixes, but each moment is different” (NPR Music).

In 2022, Portugal receives the concerts presenting the new album, on the 18th of April, at the Casa da Música, in Porto and in Lisbon, on the 19th of April, at the Capitol. Tickets will go on sale at the usual venues starting on Friday, May 7, at 9:00 am.

“Maré” is the first single from “Drama”, an optimistic and apparently happy song, which contains less cheerful details, hidden under the surface. “Maré” is based on a Spanish proverb that predicts something like “the tide takes what it brings”.

Those less versed in Rodrigo Amarante’s work will remember “Tuyo”, the song from Netflix’s Narcos series. Or the Little Joy album. Perhaps they will be surprised by your credits in the authorship of songs of Gal Costa, Norah Jones and Gilberto Gil. It is possible that they saw him playing live with the Brazilian samba super group Orquestra Imperial. But it is most likely that they will remember him in the mythical indie band Los Hermanos. For those who think they know everything about Rodrigo Amarante, “Drama” will change their lives.

Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1976, Rodrigo Amarante points out two incidents in his past that had a direct impact on his compositions: a childhood illness that made him (and makes him) appreciate the beauty of a second chance; and the moment when the father (with his reluctant consent) cut off his long hair, in an attempt to unload all the drama and sensitivity from his young head.

“Drama” began to take shape in late 2018, with Rodrigo Amarante’s band – “Lucky” Paul Taylor on drums, bassist Todd Dahlhoff, Andres Renteria on percussion and Amarante on guitar. Throughout the writing and recording process in 2019, some songs were removed from the bottom of the drawers and other ideas emerged. In early 2020, with the album yet to be finished, the pandemic forced Los Angeles to lockdown and Rodrigo Amarante found himself alone, taking the opportunity to add overdubs and mix the songs with Noah Georgeson, although the two were never in the same room. Unsurprisingly, the isolation would eventually dictate the sound of the album.

“Drama” ends with the piano and Amarante’s voice in “The End“. “To live is to fall” and we ask ourselves: after all the emotional turbulence that you have been through, is it a farewell message? “Everything is going well,” says Rodrigo Amarante. “Whispering. You get taller like that, people respond better to an invitation “, and adds:” Facing the absurd while remaining kind, being open to the gifts of confusion; that’s why we created these tools that are stories and music, to help us see each other.”
