Romaria d’Agonia takes salt carpet to Viana do Castelo Vaccination Center

The nearly 1,000 people who are vaccinated daily against covid-19 at the Vaccination Center of Viana do Castelo and the dozens of health professionals who work there will be surprised this Tuesday with a 7.5 square meter rug, made with 100 kilos of salt by elements of the Ribeira, in a tribute of the Commission of Festivals of the Pilgrimage of Nossa Senhora d’Agonia.

It is a carpet 2.5 meters wide and 3 meters long, a small sample of the hustle, hours of work and the unique spectacle that in the days of the patron saint of the Pilgrimage, before the pandemic, took over the streets of Stream of Viana do Castelo.

Using almost 100 kilograms of salt, dyed in various colors, three people from Ribeira will begin the work of making this rug, recreating Viana do Castelo’s “Heart”, in shades of red and white, at the beginning of this Monday night. Monday, August 9, which will last for more than two hours.

The Viana do Castelo Vaccination Center is located in the Nicolau Veríssimo Sports Pavilion, in Meadela, having started the vaccination of the municipality’s population against covid-19 on February 18 of this year.

Between 800 and 1,000 people are vaccinated there per day, according to data from the municipality, with a record of 1,500 doses administered in a single day.

The Romaria d’Agonia will take place this year from August 19th to 22nd, with a program that includes moments only online and some with audiences, namely the Eucharist, the Costume Festival or the concerts of Canário e Amigos, of Sons do Minho, Orquestra Popular Sopro de Cordas de Outeiro and also the Folklore Festival, following the rules in force defined by the General Directorate of Health.

The forecast is that the shows at the Cultural Center will have free admission and limited seats, which will require a ticket to be collected on the same day.
