Australian duo Royel Otis have just released their new single, “car,” a melancholic and infectious jangle pop song, available now. The song is a preview of their second studio album, Hickey, which will arrive on August 22.
Written and produced by Royel Maddell and Otis Pavlovic in collaboration with Blake Slatkin (Gracie Abrams, Omar Apollo) and Omer Fedi (Lil Nas X, The Kid LAROI), “car” is minimalist, catchy and emotional.
With nostalgic melodies and pulsating beats, the lyrics address a painful goodbye: “Yeah I’ll meet you at the car on the corner, but we know it’s gotta change sometime / You know I love the taste of your water, but I think it’s time to say goodbye.”
The new song follows the single “moody,” released in May and co-written by Amy Allen, which was the first song taken from the upcoming album. With a laid-back sound and ’90s grooves, Royel Otis has cemented itself as one of the most promising names in indie rock today.
